وروي عن ابن عباس أنه قال: السمود الغناء بلغة حمير؛ يقال: اسمدي لنا أي غني لنا.
And it is narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said: 'Al-samud' is singing in the dialect of Himyar; it is said: 'Ismidi lana' meaning sing for us.
ويقال للقينة: أسمدينا أي ألهينا بالغناء؛
And it is said to the singer: 'Asmidina' meaning entertain us with singing;
فقال ما لي أراكم سامدين ، قال أبو عبيد قوله سامدين يعني القيام؛
So he said, 'What is it that I see you samidun?' Abu Ubaid said, his saying 'samidun' means standing;
قال المبرد: السامد القائم في تحير، وأنشد:
Al-Mubarrad said: 'Al-samid' is the one standing in confusion, and he recited:
قيل: قم فانظر إليهم، ... ثم دع عنك السمودا
It was said: Stand and look at them, ... Then leave aside the standing/heedlessness
ومننه الحديث الآخر: ما هذا السمود ؛
And from it is the other Hadith: What is this 'samud' (standing/heedlessness);
وسمد سمودا: رفع رأسه تكبرا.
And he raised his head in arrogance, 'samuda'.
