Abu Adnan said: Jabir told me about arrogance, that when someone argues with people, he refutes everything they say. I said: How does he refute them? He said: He invalidates everything they say.

وروى الشعبي أنه قال: ما سددت على خصم قط؛

And Ash-Sha'bi narrated that he said: I have never blocked an opponent;

قال شمر: زعم العتريفي أن معناه ما قطعت على خصم قط.

Shamir said: Al-'Utayriyyi claimed that its meaning is 'I have never cut off an opponent.'

والسد: الظل؛ عن ابن الأعرابي، وأنشد: قعدت له في سد نقض معود، ... لذلك، في صحراء جذم درينها أي جعلته سترة لي من أن يراني.

And as-sadd: shade; from Ibn Al-A'rabi, and he recited: I sat for him in the shade of a worn-out shelter, ... for that, in a desert whose old roots are deep, meaning I made it a screen for me from being seen.
