وجعودة الشعر هي الغالبة على شعور العرب، فإذا مدح الرجل بالجعد لم يخرج عن هذين المعنيين.
And curliness of hair is dominant among the Arabs, so if a man is praised for being Ja'd, it does not deviate from these two meanings.
أحدهما أن يقال رجل جعد إذا كان قصيرا متردد الخلق،
One is to say a man is Ja'd if he is short and of a hesitant build,
والثاني أن يقال رجل جعد إذا كان بخيلا لئيما لا يبض حجره،
And the second is to say a man is Ja'd if he is stingy, mean, whose hand does not open,
وإذا قالوا رجل جعد السبوطة فهو مدح، إلا أن يكون قططا مفلفلا كشعر الزنج والنوبة فهو حينئذ ذم؛
And if they say a man has Ja'd straightness (of hair), it is praise, unless it is very curly and kinky like the hair of the Zanj and Nubians, then it is blame;
قد تيمتني طفلة أملود ... بفاحم، زينه التجعيد
A smooth young girl has captivated me ... with jet-black hair, adorned by curling.

وبعير جعد: كثير الوبر جعده.
And a Ja'd camel: its wool is abundant and curly.
وقد كني بأبي الجعد والذئب يكنى أبا جعدة وأبا جعادة وليس له بنت تسمى بذلك؛
And the wolf is given the kunya Abu Al-Ja'd and Abu Ja'dah, and it does not have a daughter named that;
ومستطعم يكنى بغير بناته، ... جعلت له حظا من الزاد أوفرا

وبنو جعدة: حي من قيس وهو أبو حي من العرب هو جعدة بن كعب بن ربيعة بن عامر بن صعصعة، منهم النابغة الجعدي.
And Banu Ja'dah: a tribe from Qays, and he is the ancestor of a tribe of Arabs, Ja'dah ibn Ka'b ibn Rabi'ah ibn 'Amir ibn Sa'sa'ah, among them is Al-Nabighah Al-Ja'di.
