And from this, it is said of a dwelling when its inhabitants leave it and wild animals inhabit it; it has become desolate.
وفي حديث أم زرع: فأراح علي من كل سائمة زوجين، ومن كل آبدة اثنتين
And in the narration of Umm Zar'ah: 'So he brought me pairs from every grazing animal, and two from every wild animal.'
وجاء بآبدة أي بأمر عظيم ينفر منه ويستوحش
And he brought a calamity, meaning a great matter that one shies away from and finds frightening.
تأبدت الدار: خلت من أهلها وصار فيها الوحش ترعاه
The dwelling became desolate: it emptied of its people and wild animals came to graze in it.
والآبدة: الداهية تبقى على الأبد
And al-ābidah: the calamity that remains forever.
ويقال للشوارد من القوافي أوابد
And stray verses of poetry are called awābid.
ويقال للطير المقيمة بأرض شتاءها وصيفها: أوابد من أبد بالمكان يأبد فهو آبد، فإذا كانت تقطع في أوقاتها فهي قواطع، والأوابد ضد القواطع من الطير
And birds that stay in a land for their winter and summer are called awābid, from 'abad in a place, ya'bidu, so he is ābid. If they migrate at their times, they are qawāṭi'. And awābid are the opposite of qawāṭi' among birds.
وأتان أبد: في كل عام تلد
And an 'abad she-donkey: gives birth every year.
ابن شميل: الأبد الأتان تلد كل عام
Ibn Shumayl: Al-abad is the she-donkey that gives birth every year.
والإبد هاهنا: الأمة لأن كونها ولودا حرمان وليس بجد أي لا تزداد إلا شرا
And al-ibidu here: the she-camel, because her being prolific is a deprivation and not a blessing, meaning she only increases in misfortune.
ويقال: وقف فلان أرضه وقفا مؤبدا إذا جعلها حبيسا لا تباع ولا تورث
And it is said: So-and-so made his land a perpetual endowment if he made it a waqf that cannot be sold or inherited.
الدنيا أمد والآخرة أبد
This world is a duration, and the Hereafter is eternity.
وأبد عليه أبدا: غضب
And he became angry with him, abada: he was angry.
فما أبيدة من أرض فأسكنها، ... وإن تجاور فيها الماء والشجر
So what is Abidah of land that I might inhabit it, ... even if water and trees are adjacent to it.
