وقالوا: لي عن هذا الأمر مندوحة أي متسع؛

And they said: I have from this matter an ample opportunity, meaning spaciousness;

تندحت الغنم في مرابضها ومسارحها وانتدحت: كلاهما تبددت وانتشرت واتسعت من البطنة؛

The sheep became dispersed in their pens and pastures, and 'intadaht': both mean they scattered, spread out, and became wide from fullness;

ومننه قيل: لي عنه مندوحة ومنتدح أي سعة.

And from it is said: I have from it an ample opportunity and an ample space, meaning spaciousness.

وإنك لفي ندحة ومندوحة من كذا أي سعة؛

وفي حديث عمران بن حصين: إن في المعاريض لمندوحة عن الكذب ؛

And in the report of Imran ibn Husayn: indeed in allusions there is an ample opportunity to avoid lying;

قال الأزهري: أصاب أبو عبيد في تفسير المندوحة أنه بمعنى السعة والفسحة، وغلط فيما جعله مشتقا حين قال: ومنه قيل انداح بطنه واندحى، لأن النون في المندوحة أصلية والنون في انداح واندحى من الدحو، فبينهما وبين الندح فرقان كبير، لأن المندوحة مأخوذة من أنداح الأرض واحدها ندح، وهو ما اتسع من الأرض؛

Al-Azhari said: Abu Ubayd was correct in interpreting 'al-manduhah' as meaning spaciousness and breadth, and he erred in what he made it derived from when he said: and from it is said 'indaha batnahu' and 'indaha', because the 'nun' in 'al-manduhah' is original, and the 'nun' in 'indaha' and 'indaha' is from 'al-dahu', so between them and 'al-nadhu' is a great difference, because 'al-manduhah' is taken from 'andaha al-ard' (the lands are wide), and its singular is 'nadhu', which is what is wide of the land;

ومن هذا قولهم: لك منتدح في البلاد أي مذهب واسع عريض.

And from this is their saying: you have in the land an 'muntadah', meaning a wide and broad path.

واندح بطن فلان اندحاحا: اتسع من البطنة.

And the belly of so-and-so became wide 'indihahan': it became spacious from fullness.

وانداح بطنه اندياحا إذا انتفخ وتدلى، من سمن كان ذلك أو علة.

And his belly became distended 'indiyahan' if it swelled and hung down, whether from fatness or illness.

وفي حديث أم سلمة أنها قالت لعائشة، رضي الله عنهما، حين أرادت الخروج إلى البصرة: قد جمع القرآن ذيلك فلا تندحيه أي لا توسعيه ولا تفرقيه بالخروج إلى البصرة، والهاء للذيل، ويروى لا تبدحيه، بالباء، أي لا تفتحيه من البدح وهو العلانية؛ أرادت قوله تعالى: وقرن في بيوتكن ولا تبرجن؛

And in the report of Umm Salamah that she said to Aisha, may God be pleased with them both, when she intended to go out to Basra: the Quran has gathered your skirt, so do not 'tandahihi', meaning do not widen it nor scatter it by going out to Basra, and the 'ha' refers to the skirt, and it is narrated 'la tubdahihi', with a 'ba', meaning do not open it from 'al-badh', which is public display; she intended the verse: 'And stay in your houses and do not display yourselves proudly;

قال الأزهري: من قاله بالباء ذهب إلى البداح، وهو ما اتسع من الأرض، ومن قاله بالنون ذهب به إلى الندح.

Al-Azhari said: whoever says it with 'ba' refers to 'al-badah', which is what is wide of the land, and whoever says it with 'nun' refers to 'al-nadhu'.

ويقال: ندحت الشيء ندحا إذا وسعته؛

And it is said: I widened something 'nadhan' if I made it spacious;

والندح الكثرة في قول العجاج حيث يقول: صيد تسامى ورما رقابها، ... بندح وهم، قطم قبقابها

And 'al-nadhu' means abundance in the saying of Al-Ajjaj where he says: prey that rose high and threw their necks, ... in abundance they were, with their thick legs
