وَأَنْشَدَ: يَأْخُذُ فِيهِ الحَيَّةُ النَّبُوحَا

وَاسْتَنْبَحَ الكَلْبُ إِذَا كَانَ فِي مَضَلَّةٍ فَأَخْرَجَ صَوْتَهُ عَلَى مِثْلِ نُبَاحِ الكَلْبِ، لِيَسْمَعَهُ الكَلْبُ فَيَتَوَهَّمَهُ كَلْبًا فَيَنْبَحَ فَيُسْتَدَلَّ بِنِبَاحِهِ فِيهِ فَيَهْتَدِيَ
And the dog estanbaḥa if it was lost and made its sound like a dog's bark, so that another dog would hear it and mistake it for a dog, and bark, and by its barking, it would be guided and find its way.
وَكَلْبٌ نَبَّاحٌ وَنَبَّاحِيٌّ: ضَخْمُ الصَّوْتِ
And a nabāḥ and nabāḥī dog: large of voice.
وَرَجُلٌ مَنْبُوحٌ: يُضْرَبُ لَهُ مَثَلُ الكَلْبِ وَيُشَبَّهُ بِهِ
And a man manbūḥ: a proverb is struck for him like a dog, and he is likened to it.
وَالمَنْبُوحُ: المَشْتُومُ.
And al-Manbūḥ: the insulted one.
يُقَالُ: نَبَحَتْنِي كِلَابُكَ أَيْ لَحِقَتْنِي شَتَائِمُكَ، وَأَصْلُهُ مِنْ نُبَاحِ الكَلْبِ، وَهُوَ صِيَاحُهُ.
It is said: Your dogs nabaḥatni, meaning your insults have reached me, and its origin is from the dog's bark, which is its cry.
وَيُقَالُ فِي مَثَلٍ: فُلَانٌ لَا يَعْوِي وَلَا يَنْبَحُ؛ يَقُولُ: مِنْ ضَعْفِهِ لَا يُعْتَدُّ بِهِ وَلَا يُكَلَّمُ بِخَيْرٍ وَلَا شَرٍّ.
And in a proverb it is said: So-and-so neither howls nor barks; meaning: due to his weakness, he is not considered and neither good nor bad is spoken to him.
وَرَجُلٌ نَبَّاحٌ: شَدِيدُ الصَّوْتِ، وَقَدْ حُكِيَتْ بِالجِيمِ.
And a nabāḥ man: loud of voice, and it has been narrated with a jīm.
وَنَبَحَ الهُدْهُدُ يَنْبَحُ نُبَاحًا: أَسَنَّ فَغَلُظَ صَوْتُهُ.
