And he met him face-to-face, confrontation, and struggle, meaning directly. The مصدر (verbal noun) came with a different form than the verb; Ibn Sīdah said: It is restricted with Sībawayh and regular with others; Al-Azhari narrated in his book: O blamer, whoever is destined for the Fire will meet it directly, and whoever is destined for eternity will be happy.

والمكافحة في الحرب: المضاربة تلقاء الوجوه.

And al-mukāfaḥah in war: striking directly to the faces.

وفي الحديث أنه قال لحسان: لا تزال مؤيدا بروح القدس ما كافحت عن رسول الله ؛

And in the Hadith, he said to Hassan: You will continue to be supported by the Holy Spirit as long as you fight for the Messenger of God.

المكافحة: المضاربة والمدافعة تلقاء الوجه، ويروى نافحت، وهو بمعناه.

Al-mukāfaḥah: striking and warding off directly to the face, and it is narrated as nāfaḥta, which has the same meaning.

وكفحه بالعصا كفحا: ضربه بها.

And he struck him with the stick, striking him: he hit him with it.

الفراء: أكفحته بالعصا أي ضربته، بالحاء.

Al-Farra': I struck him with the stick, meaning I hit him, with the letter Hā'.

قال الأزهري: كفحته بالعصا والسيف إذا ضربته مواجهة، صحيح.

Al-Azhari said: I struck him with the stick and the sword if I struck him face-to-face, which is correct.

وكفح عنه كفحا: جبن.

And he showed fear regarding it, showing fear: he was cowardly.

وأكفحته عني أي رددته وجنبته عن الإقدام علي.

And I repelled him from me, meaning I turned him away and kept him from approaching me.

الجوهري: كافحوهم إذا استقبلوهم في الحرب بوجوههم ليس دونها ترس ولا غيره.

Al-Jawhari: Confront them if you meet them in war with your faces, with no shield or anything else in front of them.

والكفيح: الكفؤ.

And al-kufayḥ: the equal.

والمكافح: المباشر بنفسه.

And al-mukāfiḥ: one who directly engages himself.

وفلان يكافح الأمور إذا باشرها بنفسه.

And so-and-so confronts matters if he deals with them himself.

وفي حديث جابر: إن الله كلم أباك كفاحا أي مواجهة ليس بينهما حجاب ولا رسول.

And in the Hadith of Jabir: Indeed, Allah spoke to your father directly, meaning face-to-face, with no veil or messenger between them.

وأكفح الدابة إكفاحا: تلقى فاها باللجام يضربه به ليلتقمه، وهو من قولهم لقيته كفاحا أي استقبلته كفة كفة.

And he bridled the animal, bridling: he met its mouth with the bit, striking it with it so it would take it, and this is from their saying 'I met him directly' meaning 'I met him face to face'.

وكفحها باللجام كفحا: جذبها.

And he pulled it with the bridle, pulling: he drew it.

وتقول في التقبيل: كافحها كفاحا قبلها غفلة وجاها.

And you say regarding kissing: He kissed her directly, meaning he kissed her by surprise and with presence.

وكفح المرأة يكفحها وكافحها: قبلها غفلة.

And he kissed the woman, he kissed her and he kissed her: he kissed her by surprise.

وفي الحديث: إني لأكفحها وأنا صائم أي أواجهها بالقبلة.

And in the Hadith: I kiss her while I am fasting, meaning I face her with a kiss.

And I kissed him, meaning I kissed him; Al-Azhari said: And in the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah, he was asked: Do you kiss while fasting? He said: Yes, and I kiss her fully, meaning I am able to kiss her and complete it without snatching, from al-mukāfaḥah, which is encountering the face, and some narrate it as 'wa aqḥafuhā'; Abu Ubayd said: Whoever narrates it as 'wa akfaḥuhā' means by al-kafḥ the meeting and direct contact with the skin, and whoever you face and meet directly, you have confronted him with kifaḥan and mukāfaḥah; Ibn Ruqāq said: He confronts the heat of midday with the morning, ... a confrontation for the nostrils, and for the mouth.

وكفيح المرأة: زوجها، وهو من ذلك.
