Indeed, Allah struck the food of the son of Adam as an example for this world, and struck this world as an example for the food of the son of Adam, and if he seasons it and salts it, meaning he spices it, from al-qazah, which is the spice thrown into the pot like cumin, coriander, and the like.

وإذا جعلت التوابل في القدر، قلت: فحيتها وتوبلتها وقزحتها، بالتخفيف.

And if you put spices in the pot, you say: faḥḥaytuhā, tawbaltuhā, and qazaḥtuhā, with shortening.

قال أبو زيد قزحت القدر تقزح قزحا وقزحانا إذا أقطرت ما خرج منها، ومليح قزيح؛ فالمليح من الملح والقزيح من القزح.

Abu Zayd said: qazaḥtu al-qidra taqazzuḥu qazḥan wa qazḥānan if it dripped what came out of it, and malīḥ qazīḥ; so al-malīḥ is from salt and al-qazīḥ is from al-qazah.

وقزح الحديث: زينه وتممه من غير أن يكذب فيه، وهو من ذلك.

And qazaḥa al-ḥadīth: he embellished it and completed it without lying in it, and it is from that.

والأقزاح، خرء الحيات، واحدها قزح.

وقزح الكلب «1» ببوله، وقزح يقزح في اللغتين جميعا قزحا، بالفتح، وقزوحا: بال، وقيل: رفع رجله وبال، وقيل: رمى به ورشه، وقيل: هو إذا أرسله دفعا.

وقوس قزح: طرائق متقوسة تبدو في السماء أيام الربيع، زاد الأزهري: غب المطر بحمرة وصفرة وخضرة، وهو غير مصروف، ولا يفصل قزح من قوس؛ لا يقال: تأمل قزح فما أبين قوسه؛ وفي الحديث عن ابن عباس: لا تقولوا قوس قزح فإن قزح اسم شيطان، وقولوا: قوس الله عز وجل ؛ قيل: سمي به لتسويله للناس وتحسينه إليهم المعاصي من التقزيح، وهو التحسين؛ وقيل: من القزح، وهي الطرائق والألوان التي في القوس، الواحدة قزحة، أو من قزح الشيء إذا ارتفع، كأنه كره ما كانوا عليه من عادات الجاهلية وأن يقال قوس الله «2» فيرفع قدرها، كما يقال بيت الله، وقالوا: قوس الله أمان من الغرق؛ والقزحة: الطريقة التي في تلك القوس.

And qaws qazah: arched stripes that appear in the sky in the spring days, Al-Azhari added: after the rain with redness, yellowness, and greenness, and it is not diptoted, and qazah is not separated from qaws; it is not said: contemplate qazah and its bow is not clear; and in the hadith from Ibn Abbas: do not say qaws qazah because qazah is the name of a devil, and say: qaws Allah the Almighty; it was said: it was named so because of its temptation of people and its beautification of sins to them from al-taqzīḥ, which is beautification; and it was said: from al-qazah, which are the stripes and colors in the bow, the singular is qazḥah, or from qazaḥa al-shay' if it rose, as if he disliked what they were upon from the customs of ignorance and that it be said qaws Allah to elevate its status, as it is said bayt Allah, and they said: qaws Allah is a protection from drowning; and al-qazḥah: the stripe in that bow.

وأما قول الأعشى يصف رجلا: جالسا في نفر قد يئسوا ... في محيل القد من صحب، قزح فإنه عنى بقزح لقبا له، وليس باسم، وقيل: هو اسم.

As for the saying of Al-A'sha describing a man: sitting with a group who had despaired... in a difficult situation with companions, Qazah, he meant by Qazah a nickname for him, not a name, and it was said: it is a name.

والتقزيح: رأس نبت «3» أو شجرة إذا تشعب شعبا مثل برثن الكلب؛ وهو اسم كالتمتين والتنبيت؛ وقد قزحت.

And al-taqzīḥ: the head of a plant or tree when it branches out like a dog's paw; and it is a name like strengthening and growing; and the plant has branched.

وفي حديث ابن عباس: نهى عن الصلاة خلف الشجرة المقزحة ؛ هي التي تشعبت شعبا كثيرة؛ وقد تقزح الشجر والنبات؛ وقيل: هي شجرة على صورة التين لها أغصان قصار في رؤوسها مثل برثن الكلب؛ وقيل: أراد بها كل شجرة قزحت الكلاب والسباع بأبوالها عليها؛ يقال: قزح الكلب ببوله إذا رفع رجله وبال.

And in the hadith of Ibn Abbas: he prohibited praying behind the branched tree; it is the one that branched out many branches; and the trees and plants have branched; and it was said: it is a tree in the form of a fig tree with short branches at their ends like a dog's paw; and it was said: he meant by it every tree that dogs and beasts urinated upon; it is said: the dog qazaḥa with its urine when it lifts its leg and urinates.

وقزح العرفج: وهو أول نباته.

And qazaḥa al-'urfuj: and it is its first growth.

وقزح أيضا: اسم جبل بالمزدلفة؛ ابن الأثير: وفي حديث أبي بكر: أنه أتى على قزح وهو يخرش بعيره بمحجنه ؛ هو القرن الذي يقف عنده الإمام بالمزدلفة، ولا ينصرف للعدل والعلمية كعمر؛ قال: وكذلك قوس قزح إلا من جعل قزح من الطرائق، فهو جمع قزحة، وقد ذكرناه آنفا.

And qazah also: the name of a mountain in Muzdalifah; Ibn Al-Athir: and in the hadith of Abu Bakr: that he passed by Qazah while he was scratching his camel with his crook; it is the horn at which the Imam stops in Muzdalifah, and it is not diptoted due to justice and proper noun like 'Umar; he said: and likewise qaws qazah unless one considers qazah to be from the stripes, then it is a plural of qazḥah, and we have mentioned that before.
