قال الطرماح: مفجعة، لا دفع للضيم عندها، ... سوى سفحان الدمع من كل مسفح
Al-Tirmmah said: A calamity, there is no warding off oppression with it, ... except the shedding of tears from every place of shedding.

And flowing tears, and tears that are flowing, shedding, and shed.
والسفح للدم: كالصب.
And the pouring of blood is like its spilling.
ورجل سفاح للدماء: سفاك.

وسفحت دمه: سفكته.

ويقال: بينهم سفاح أي سفك للدماء.

وفي حديث أبي هلال: فقتل على رأس الماء حتى سفح الدم الماء ؛ جاء تفسيره في الحديث: أنه غطى الماء ؛
And in the hadith of Abu Hilal: So he killed at the head of the water until the blood spilled the water; its interpretation came in the hadith: that it covered the water;
والتسافح والمسافحة: الزنا والفجور؛ وفي التنزيل: محصنين غير مسافحين*
And mutual fornication and fornication: adultery and immorality; and in the Quran: chaste, not fornicating*
وهو أن تقيم امرأة مع رجل على فجور من غير تزويج صحيح؛ ويقال لابن البغي: ابن المسافحة؛
And it is for a woman to live with a man in immorality without a valid marriage; and the son of a fornicatress is called: the son of the fornicatress;
وفي الحديث: أوله سفاح وآخره نكاح ، وهي المرأة تسافح رجلا مدة، فيكون بينهما اجتماع على فجور ثم يتزوجها بعد ذلك، وكره بعض الصحابة ذلك، وأجازه أكثرهم.
And in the hadith: its beginning is fornication and its end is marriage, and it is a woman who fornicates with a man for a period, so there is between them a union in immorality, then he marries her afterwards; some companions disliked that, and most permitted it.
والمسافحة: الفاجرة؛ وقال تعالى: محصنات غير مسافحات ؛
And the fornicatress: the immoral woman; and Allah Almighty said: chaste, not fornicating;
وقال أبو إسحاق: المسافحة التي لا تمتنع عن الزنا؛ قال: وسمي الزنا سفاحا لأنه كان عن غير عقد، كأنه بمنزلة الماء المسفوح الذي لا يحبسه شيء؛
And Abu Ishaq said: The fornicatress is she who does not refrain from adultery; he said: and adultery is called 'sifah' because it was without a contract, as if it were like spilled water that nothing holds back;
وكل واحد منهما سفح منيته أي دفقها بلا حرمة أباحت دفقها؛
And each of them shed his semen, meaning he ejaculated it without a sanctity that permitted its ejaculation;
وكان أهل الجاهلية إذا خطب الرجل المرأة، قال: أنكحيني، فإذا أراد الزنا، قال: سافحيني.
And the people of ignorance, when a man proposed to a woman, he would say: Marry me, and if he wanted to commit adultery, he would say: Fornicate with me.
وإننه لمسفوح العنق أي طويله غليظه.
And indeed, he has a spilled neck, meaning long and thick.
والسفيحان: جوالقان كالخرج يجعلان على البعير؛
And the Sufayhan: two saddlebags like a pannier placed on a camel;
والسفيح: قدح من قداح الميسر، مما لا نصيب له؛
And the Sufih: a lot from the lots of maisir, which has no share;
وقال غيره: يقال لكل من عمل عملا لا يجدي عليه: مسفح، وقد سفح تسفيحا؛ شبه بالقدح السفيح؛
And others said: it is said of anyone who does an action that yields no benefit to him: masfah, and he has done tasfihan; likened to the Sufih lot;
وناقة مسفوحة الإبط أي واسعة الإبط؛
And a she-camel with a spilled armpit, meaning wide-axiled;
وجمل مسفوح الضلوع: ليس بكزها؛
And a camel with spilled ribs: not stout;
