And Satih: this is the soothsayer of Dhi'b, from Banu Dhi'b, who used to practice divination in the Jahiliyyah. He was named so because when he became angry, he would sit spread out, according to their claims;
وقيل: سمي بذلك لأنه لم يكن له بين مفاصله قصب تعمده، فكان أبدا منبسطا منسطحا على الأرض لا يقدر على قيام ولا قعود، ويقال: كان لا عظم فيه سوى رأسه.
And it is said: he was named so because he had no bones between his joints that would support him, so he was always spread out, lying flat on the ground, unable to stand or sit. And it is said: he had no bones except his head.
انسطح الرجل: امتد على قفاه ولم يتحرك.
A man insaṭaḥa: he stretched out on his back and did not move.
والسطح: سطحك الشيء على وجه الأرض كما تقول في الحرب: سطحوهم أي أضجعوهم على الأرض.
And al-saṭḥ: your flattening of something on the face of the earth, as you say in war: saṭaḥūhum, meaning, you laid them down on the ground.
وتسطح الشيء وانسطح: انبسط.
And tasṭaḥa the thing and insaṭaḥa: it spread out.
وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله تعالى عنه، قال للمرأة التي معها الصبيان: أطعميهم وأنا أسطح لك أي أبسطه حتى يبرد.
And in the hadith of Umar, may God be pleased with him, he said to the woman with the children: Feed them, and I will saṭaḥu it for you, meaning, I will spread it out until it cools.
والسطح: ظهر البيت إذا كان مستويا لانبساطه؛ معروف، وهو من كل شيء أعلاه، والجمع سطوح، وفعلك التسطيح.

And in the hadith: that the Prophet, peace be upon him, was on one of his journeys, and they lost water, so he sent Ali and so-and-so to look for water, and they found a woman between two saṭīḥatayn; it was said: The saṭīḥah is a waterskin made of two skins, or a waterskin larger than it.

And al-misṭaḥ: a flat rock surrounded by stones where water collects; Al-Azhari said: And al-misṭaḥ is also a wide slab of rock surrounded for rainwater; he said: And sometimes God creates at the mouth of a well a smooth, level rock, and it is surrounded by stones, and the camels are watered from it, like a basin; and from this is the saying of Al-Ṭarmaḥ: on the sides of Mari and Misṭaḥ.

And al-misṭaḥ: a pole from the poles of a tent and a pavilion; and in the hadith of the Prophet, peace be upon him: that Ḥamal ibn Mālik said to the Prophet, peace be upon him: I was between two neighbors of mine, and one of them struck the other with a misṭaḥ, causing her to miscarry a dead fetus and die. So the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, decreed the blood money for the murdered woman upon the 'aqilah of the killer; and for the fetus, a ghurrah was decreed;
وقال عوف بن مالك النضري، وفي حواشي ابن بري مالك بن عوف النضري: تعرض ضيطارو خزاعة دوننا، ... وما خير ضيطار يقلب مسطحا يقول: ليس له سلاح يقاتل به غير مسطح.
And ʿAwf ibn Mālik al-Nuḍrī, and in the margins of Ibn Burri, Mālik ibn ʿAwf al-Nuḍrī, said: The Ḍiṭār of Khuza'ah are exposed before us, ... And what good is a ḍiṭār who wields a misṭaḥ. He means: he has no weapon to fight with other than a misṭaḥ.
والضيطار: الضخم الذي لا غناء عنده.
And al-ḍiṭār: the huge one who has no use.
والمسطح: الخشبة المعرضة على دعامتي الكرم بالأطر؛ قال ابن شميل: إذا عرش الكرم، عمد إلى دعائم يحفر لها في الأرض، لكل دعامة شعبتان، ثم تؤخذ شعبة فتعرض على الدعامتين، وتسمى هذه الخشبة المعرضة المسطح، ويجعل على المساطح أطر من أدناها إلى أقصاها؛ تسمى المساطح بالأطر مساطح.
And al-misṭaḥ: the beam laid across the two supports of the grapevine with frames; Ibn Shumayl said: When the grapevine is trellised, supports are dug into the ground, each support having two branches. Then a branch is taken and laid across the two supports, and this laid beam is called al-misṭaḥ. And frames are placed on the misṭaḥ from its lowest to its highest point; the misṭaḥ with the frames are called masāṭiḥ.
