And from it is the saying of Ali, may God be pleased with him: 'They stirred between me and them drinks and provisions,' meaning they mixed.

كان أحدهم يعمد إلى الناقة فتفصد له ويأخذ دمها في إناء فيشربه.

One of them would go to a she-camel, and it would be bled for him, and he would take its blood in a vessel and drink it.

مجاديح السماء: أنواؤها، يقال: أرسلت السماء مجاديحها؛

Majādīḥ of the sky: its 'anwā', it is said: 'The sky has sent forth its 'majādīḥ';

يقال: تردد ريق الماء في السحاب؛

It is said: the moisture of water is repeated in the clouds;

فقال: لقد استسقيت بمجاديح السماء.

So he said: 'I have sought rain through the 'majādīḥ of the sky.'

والقياس أن يكون واحدها مجداح، فأما مجدح فجمعه مجادح؛

And the standard form would be majdāḥ, but majdaḥ, its plural is majādiḥ;

والذي يراد من الحديث أنه جعل الاستغفار استسقاء بتأول قول الله عز وجل: استغفروا ربكم إنه كان غفارا يرسل السماء عليكم مدرارا؛

And what is intended from the Hadith is that he made seeking forgiveness a means of seeking rain, interpreting the saying of God Almighty: 'Seek forgiveness from your Lord, indeed He was ever Forgiving. He will send the sky upon you in abundance;

وأراد عمر إبطال الأنواء والتكذيب بها لأنه جعل الاستغفار هو الذي يستسقى به، لا المجاديح والأنواء التي كانوا يستسقون بها.

And 'Umar intended to invalidate the 'anwā' and deny them because he made seeking forgiveness the means by which rain is sought, not the 'majādīḥ and 'anwā' by which they used to seek rain.

والمجاديح: واحدها مجدح، وهو نجم من النجوم كانت العرب تزعم أنها تمطر به كقولهم الأنواء، وهو المجدح أيضا،

And Al-majādīḥ: their singular is majdaḥ, and it is a star among the stars that the Arabs claimed brought rain, like their saying 'Al-anwā', and it is also Al-majdaḥ,

وقيل: هو الدبران لأنه يطلع آخرا ويسمى حادي النجوم؛

And it was said: it is Aldebaran because it rises last and is called the leader of the stars;

قال شمر: الدبران يقال له المجدح والتالي والتابع،

Shamr said: Aldebaran is called Al-majdaḥ, and Al-tālī, and Al-tābi',

وكان بعضهم يدعو جناحي الجوزاء المجدحين،

And some of them used to call the two wings of Gemini Al-majdaḥayn,

وهو عند العرب من الأنواء الدالة على المطر،

And it is, among the Arabs, from the 'anwā' indicating rain,

فجعل عمر، رضي الله عنه، الاستغفار مشبها للأنواء مخاطبة لهم بما يعرفونه، لا قولا بالأنواء،

So 'Umar, may God be pleased with him, made seeking forgiveness analogous to the 'anwā', addressing them in terms they understood, not affirming the 'anwā',

وجاء بلفظ الجمع لأنه أراد الأنواء جميعا التي يزعمون أن من شأنها المطر.

And he used the plural form because he intended all the 'anwā' which they claimed were responsible for rain.
