And some of the Bedouins informed me that the 'urfajah has a wide root, taking up a piece of land, from which sprout many stems as large as the root. It has no significant leaves; they are merely thin twigs, and at their tips are tufts where something like yellow hair appears on their heads.
وعن الأعراب القدم العرفج مثل قعدة الإنسان يبيض إذا يبس، وله ثمرة صفراء، والإبل والغنم تأكله رطبا ويابسا
And from the ancient Bedouins, the 'urfaj resembles a human sitting posture; it turns white when dry, has a yellow fruit, and camels and sheep eat it fresh and dry.
ولهبه شديد الحمرة ويبالغ بحمرته، فيقال: كأن لحيته ضرام عرفجة
And its flame is intensely red and exaggerated in its redness, so it is said: 'as if his beard were the blazing of 'urfaj'.
وفي حديث أبي بكر، رضي الله عنه: خرج كأن لحيته ضرام عرفج

قال أبو عمرو: إذا مطر العرفج ولان عوده، قيل: قد ثقب عوده
Abu Amr said: When the 'urfaj is rained upon and its wood softens, it is said: 'Its wood has become moist.'
فإذا اسود شيئا، قيل: قد قمل
And when it darkens slightly, it is said: 'It has become infested (with dark spots).'
فإذا ازداد شيئا، قيل: قد ارقاط
And when it increases somewhat, it is said: 'It has grown.'
فإذا ازداد شيئا، قيل: قد أدبى
And when it increases a little more, it is said: 'It has grown further.'
فإذا تمت خوصته، قيل: قد أخوص.
And when its foliage is complete, it is said: 'It has become leafy.'
ونار العرفج تسميها العرب نار الزحفتين، لأن الذي يوقدها يزحف إليها، فإذا اتقدت زحف عنها.
And the fire of the 'urfaj is called by the Arabs the fire of the two crawls, because the one who lights it crawls towards it, and when it flares up, he crawls away from it.
