Umar is a lamp for the people of Paradise; it was said: he meant that the forty who completed their lives with Umar are all from the people of Paradise, and Umar among them is like a lamp, because they were strengthened by his Islam and became known to people, and they revealed their Islam after they were hidden and fearful, just as the walker is guided by the light of a lamp;
وجعلنا سراجا وهاجا .
And We made a luminous lamp.
وسراجا منيرا ؛ إنما يريد مثل السراج الذي يستضاء به، أو مثل الشمس في النور والظهور.
And a shining lamp; it means like the lamp by which one is guided, or like the sun in its light and prominence.
والهدى: سراج المؤمن، على التشبيه.
And guidance: is the believer's lamp, by way of simile.
وسراجا منيرا ؛ المعنى أرسلناك شاهدا، وذا سراج منير أي وذا كتاب منير بين، وإن شئت كان وسراجا منصوبا على معنى داعيا إلى الله وتاليا كتابا بينا؛
And a shining lamp; the meaning is We sent you as a witness, and possessing a shining lamp, meaning possessing a clear and illuminating book, and if you wish, 'sirajan' is accusative meaning calling to God and reciting a clear book;
وإن شئت كان وسراجا منصوبا على معنى داعيا إلى الله وتاليا كتابا بينا؛ قال الأزهري: وإن جعلت سراجا نعتا للنبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكان حسنا، ويكون معناه هاديا كأنه سراج يهتدى به في الظلم.
And if you wish, 'sirajan' is accusative meaning calling to God and reciting a clear book; Al-Azharī said: And if you make 'sirajan' an adjective for the Prophet, peace be upon him, it would be good, and its meaning would be a guide as if he were a lamp by which one is guided in darkness.
وأسرج السراج: أوقده.
And he lit the lamp: he ignited it.
وجبين سارج: واضح كالسراج، عن ثعلب؛
And a 'sarj' forehead: clear like a lamp, according to Tha'lab;
وسرج الله وجهه وبهجه أي حسنه؛
And God 'sarraj' his face and its radiance, meaning He made it beautiful;
وفاحما ومرسنا مسرجا
And a dark and well-formed, adorned nose
شبه أنفه وامتداده بالسيف السريجي، وهو ضرب من السيوف التي تعرف بالسريجيات.
He likened his nose and its length to a Sarayjian sword, which is a type of sword known as 'Sarayjiyyat'.
وسرج الشيء: زينه.
And 'saraja' the thing: adorned it.
وسرجه الله وسرجه: وفقه.
And God 'sarraja' him and 'sarraja' him: granted him success.
وسرج الكذب يسرجه سرجا: عمله.
And he 'saraja' the lie, he 'yasrujuhu' with 'sarjan': he fabricated it.
ورجل سراج مراج: كذاب؛ وقيل: هو الكذاب الذي لا يصدق أثره يكذبك من أين جاء، ويفرد فيقال: رجل سراج، وقد سرج.
And a man 'siraj miraj': a liar; and it was said: he is the liar whose trace is not believed, he lies to you about where he came from, and he is singled out and it is said: a 'siraj' man, and he has 'saraja'.
ويقال: بكل أم فلان فسرج عليها بأسروجة.
And it is said: with every mother of so-and-so, he 'saraja' upon her with an 'asrujah'.
وسريج: قين معروف، والسيوف السريجية، منسوبة إليه،
And Surayj: a known blacksmith, and the Sarayjian swords are attributed to him,
والسرجوجة والسرجيجة: الخلق والطبيعة والطريقة؛ يقال: الكرم من سرجيجته وسرجوجته أي خلقه؛
And the 'sarjujjah' and the 'sarjijjah': character, nature, and way; it is said: generosity is from his 'sarjijjatihi' and 'sarjujjatihi', meaning his disposition;
إنه لكريم السرجوجة والسرجيجة أي كريم الطبيعة.
Indeed, he is of noble 'sarjujjah' and 'sarjijjah', meaning of noble nature.
إذا استوت أخلاق القوم، قيل: هم على سرجوجة واحدة، ومرن ومرس.
If the characters of people are uniform, it is said: they are on one 'sarjujjah', and they are flexible and smooth.
