وَقَالَ ابْنُ شِمَيْلٍ: الزَّوْجُ اثْنَانِ، كُلُّ اثْنَيْنِ زَوْجٌ
And Ibn Shumayl said: The pair is two; every two is a pair.
وَيُقَالُ لِلرَّجُلِ وَالْمَرْأَةِ: الزَّوْجَانِ.
And the man and woman are called: the couple.
وَأَنَّهُ خَلَقَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَى

And indeed, he who strives incites my wife
حَتَّى يَلِجَ الْجَمَلُ فِي سَمِّ الْخِيَاطِ
until the camel should pass through the eye of the needle
فَقَالَ: هُوَ زَوْجُ النَّاقَةِ
So he said: It is the she-camel's mate.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ
O Prophet, say to your wives
وَزَوَّجْنَاهُمْ بِحُورٍ عِينٍ
And We will pair them with beautiful, large-eyed women
احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ
Gather those who did wrong, and their kinds
وَقَالَ الْفَرَّاءُ: تَزَوَّجْتُ بِامْرَأَةٍ، لُغَةٌ فِي أَزْدِ شَنُوءَةَ.
And Al-Farra' said: I married a woman, a dialectal usage of Azd Shanu'ah.
وَتَزَاوَجَ الْقَوْمُ وَازْدَوَجُوا: تَزَوَّجَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا
And the people married each other and paired up: some of them married others.
وَامْرَأَةٌ مِزْوَاجٌ: كَثِيرَةُ التَّزَوُّجِ وَالتَّزَاوُجِ
And a woman 'mizwaj': frequently marrying and remarrying.
وَازْدَوَجَ الْكَلَامُ وَتَزَاوَجَ: أَشْبَهَ بَعْضُهُ بَعْضًا فِي السَّجْعِ أَوِ الْوَزْنِ
And speech 'izdawaja' and 'tazawaja': some of it resembled some of it in rhyme or meter.
وَزَوَّجَ الشَّيْءَ بِالشَّيْءِ، وَزَوَّجَهُ إِلَيْهِ: قَرَنَهُ.

وَقَالَ الزَّجَّاجُ فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ
And Al-Zajjaj said regarding the Almighty's saying: Gather those who did wrong, and their kinds
وَكُلُّ شَيْئَيْنِ اقْتَرَنَ أَحَدُهُمَا بِالْآخَرِ: فَهُمَا زَوْجَانِ.
And every two things that are joined together: they are a pair.
وَقَالَ أَبُو مَنْصُورٍ: أَرَادَ بِالتَّزْوِيجِ التَّصْنِيفَ؛ وَالزَّوْجُ: الصِّنْفُ.
And Abu Mansur said: He intended by 'tazwij' classification; and 'zawj' is the kind.
وَكَانَ الْأَصْمَعِيُّ لَا يُجِيزُ أَنْ يُقَالَ لِفَرْخَيْنِ مِنْ حَمَامٍ وَغَيْرِهِ: زَوْجٌ، وَلَا لِلنَّعْلَيْنِ زَوْجٌ، وَيُقَالُ فِي ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ: زَوْجَانِ لِكُلِّ اثْنَيْنِ.
And Al-Asma'i did not permit it to be said for two chicks of doves or others: a pair, nor for two shoes: a pair, and for all of that it is said: a pair for every two.
لَهَا وَلَدٌ مِنْ زَوْجِهَا، وَهِيَ عَاقِرٌ
She has a child from her husband, and she is barren
أَرَادَتْ مِنْ زَوْجِ حَمَامٍ لَهَا، وَهِيَ عَاقِرٌ
She meant from a pair of doves she had, and she is barren.
وَالزَّوْجُ: الصِّنْفُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ.
And 'zawj': the kind of everything.
وَأَنْبَتَتْ مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ بَهِيجٍ
And produced from every delightful kind
وَآخَرَ مِنْ شَكْلِهِ أَزْوَاجٌ
And others of its kind, in pairs
وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمُ: الزَّوْجُ هُنَا النَّمَطُ يُطْرَحُ عَلَى الْهُودَجِ
And some of them said: 'Zawj' here means the patterned cloth thrown on the howdah.
