He likened the sound of thunder to the sounds of these (camels) because they cry out in distress for the loss of their young.

والخليج من البحر: شرم منه
And the khaleej from the sea: an inlet from it.
والخليج شعبة تنشعب من الوادي تعبر بعض مائه إلى مكان آخر
And the khaleej is a branch that branches off from the valley, carrying some of its water to another place.
أن فلانا ساق خليجا
That so-and-so led a khaleej (canal).
الخلج التعبون
Al-khulj: the weary ones.
والخلج: المرتعدو الأبدان
And al-khulj: those whose bodies tremble.
والخليج الحبل لأنه يجبذ ما شد به
And the khaleej is the rope because it pulls what is tied to it.
يقول: يقاسي هذه الفحول أي قد شدت به، وهي تنزو وترمح

لا تخلج الفصيل عن أمه، فإن الذئب عالم بمكان الفصيل اليتيم

Then he was struck down for two months, then he recovered, having been thrown down.
ثم أفاق مختلجا قد أخذ لحمه وقوته
Then he recovered, trembling, having lost his flesh and strength.
ونوى خلوج بينة الخلاج، مشكوك فيها
And a khuluj camel's intention, its distress is clear, it is doubtful.
إني لبين خالجين في ذلك الأمر أي نفسين
I am between two pulls (conflicting desires) in that matter, meaning two souls.
وما يخالجني في ذلك الأمر شك أي ما أشك فيه
And no doubt assails me in that matter, meaning I do not doubt it.
قد خلجت بحاجب وعين، ... يا قوم، خلوا بينها وبيني
She moved her eyebrow and eye, ... O people, leave her and me alone.
والعين تختلج أي تضطرب
And the eye twitches, meaning it trembles.
أخلج الرجل حاجبيه عن عينيه واختلج حاجباه إذا تحركا
The man raised his eyebrows from his eyes, and his eyebrows twitched if they moved.
يكلمني ويخلج حاجبيه، ... لأحسب عنده علما قديما

نطعنهم سلكى ومخلوجة، ... كرك لأمين على نابل
We thrust at them straight and sideways, ... like a quiver returned to an archer who shot them.
والخلج: ضرب من النكاح، وهو إخراجه، والدعس إدخاله
And al-khulj: a type of intercourse, which is its withdrawal, and al-da's is its insertion.

أن يشتكي الرجل لحمه وعظامه من عمل يعمله أو طول مشي وتعب
That a man complains of his flesh and bones from work he does or long walking and fatigue.
إنما قيل له: خلج لأن جذبه يخلج عضده
