And in the Hadith: Every prayer in which the Fatiha is not recited is a deficiency, meaning a lack.

وفي حديث النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أنه قال: كل صلاة ليست فيها قراءة، فهي خداج أي ذات خداج، وهو النقصان.

And in the Hadith of the Prophet, peace be upon him, he said: Every prayer in which there is no recitation is a deficiency, meaning possessing deficiency, which is a lack.

ويقال: أخدج الرجل صلاته، فهو مخدج وهي مخدجة، ويقال: أخدج فلان أمره إذا لم يحكمه، وأنضج أمره إذا أحكمه، والأصل في ذلك إخداج الناقة ولدها وإنضاجها إياه.

And it is said: So-and-so made his prayer deficient, and he is one who makes it deficient and she is one who makes it deficient. And it is said: So-and-so failed to perfect his matter if he did not master it, and perfected his matter if he mastered it. The origin of this is the she-camel's premature birth of her offspring and her perfecting it.

الأصمعي: الخداج النقصان، وأصل ذلك من خداج الناقة إذا ولدت ولدا ناقص الخلق، أو لغير تمام.

Al-Asma'i said: Al-khidaj is deficiency, and the origin of that is from the she-camel's premature birth when she gives birth to an offspring of incomplete formation, or before completion.

وفي حديث الزكاة: في كل ثلاثين بقرة خديج أي ناقص الخلق في الأصل؛ يريد تبيع كالخديج في صغر أعضائه ونقص قوته عن الثني والرباعي.

And in the Hadith of Zakat: In every thirty cows, there is a khadij, meaning one of incomplete formation in origin; it means a Tabi' (a two-year-old camel) like a khadij in the smallness of its limbs and the deficiency of its strength compared to a Thani and a Ruba'i.

وفي حديث سعد: أنه أتى النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، بمخدج مقيم أي ناقص الخلق.

And in the Hadith of Sa'd: that he brought to the Prophet, peace be upon him, a mukhdej (defective) offspring, meaning of incomplete formation.

وفي حديث علي، رضوان الله عليه: ولا تخدج التحية أي لا تنقصها.

And in the Hadith of Ali, may God be pleased with him: And do not diminish the greeting, meaning do not lessen it.

والولد خديج. وشاة خدوج، وجمعها خدوج وخداج وخدائج.

And she gave birth prematurely, and she is one who gives birth prematurely and she is one who gives birth prematurely: she came with her offspring of incomplete formation, and her gestation period was complete, and the offspring is khaduj, khadaj, mukhdej, makhdooj, and khadij:

ومننه قول علي، رضوان الله عليه، في ذي الثدية: مخدج اليد أي ناقص اليد.

And from it is the saying of Ali, may God be pleased with him, about Dhu al-Thudiyah: mukhdej al-yad, meaning deficient in the hand.

وقيل: إذا ألقت الناقة ولدها تام الخلق قبل وقت النتاج، قيل: أخدجت، وهي مخدج؛ فإن رمته ناقصا قبل الوقت قيل: خدجت، وهي خادج؛ فإن كان عادة لها، فهي مخداج فيهما.

And it is said: If the she-camel expels her offspring fully formed before the time of birth, it is said: she gave birth prematurely (akhdajat), and she is one who gives birth prematurely (mukhdej); if she drops it incomplete before the time, it is said: she miscarried prematurely (khadajat), and she is one who miscarries prematurely (khadij); if it is her habit, then she is habitually premature (mikhdaj) in both cases.

وقال أبو خيرة: خدجت المرأة ولدها وأخدجته، بمعنى واحد، قال الأزهري: وذلك إذا ألقته وقد استبان خلقه، قال: ويقال إذا ألقته دما؛ قد خدجت، وهو خداج؛ وإذا ألقته قبل أن ينبت شعره قيل: قد غضنت، وهو الغضان؛ وأنشد:

And Abu Khayrah said: The woman miscarried her offspring and gave birth prematurely to it, meaning the same. Al-Azhari said: And that is when she expels it and its form is apparent. He said: And it is said if she expels it as blood; she has miscarried (qad khadajat), and it is khidaj; and if she expels it before its hair grows, it is said: she has aborted (qad ghadanat), and it is al-ghadan; and he recited:

فهن لا يحملن إلا خدجا

So they do not carry except a premature offspring

وقال: وناقة ذات خداج: تخدج وتخدج كثيرا.

And he said: And a she-camel with premature birth: she miscarries and miscarries frequently.

وخدجت الزندة: لم تور نارا.

And the tinderbox misfired: it did not produce fire.

وفي التهذيب: أخدجت الزندة.

And in Al-Tahdhib: The tinderbox failed to ignite.

وابن الأعرابي: أخدجت الشتوة إذا قل مطرها.

And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: The winter was sparse if its rain was little.
