قال الأزهري: وأما حدج الأحمال بمعنى توسيقها فغير معروف عند العرب، وهو غلط.

Al-Azhari said: As for ḥadj al-aḥmāl meaning to pack them, it is not known among the Arabs, and it is an error.

قال شمر: سمعت أعرابيا يقول: انظروا إلى هذا البعير الغرنوق الذي عليه الحداجة،

Shammir said: I heard a Bedouin say: Look at this magnificent camel with the ḥadājah upon it,

ولا يحدج البعير حتى تكمل فيه الأداة، وهي البدادان والبطان والحقب، وجمع الحداجة حدائج.

And the camel is not loaded until the gear is complete on it, which are the bidādān, biṭṭān, and ḥaqab, and the plural of ḥadājah is ḥadā'ij.

ابن السكيت: الحدوج والأحداج والحدائج مراكب النساء، واحدها حدج وحداجة؛

Ibn al-Sikkit: Al-ḥudūj, al-aḥdāj, and al-ḥadā'ij are mounts for women, their singular is ḥadj and ḥadājah;

روي عن عمر، رضي الله عنه، أنه قال: حجة هاهنا ثم احدج هاهنا حتى تفنى ؛ يعني إلى الغزو،

It is narrated from Umar, may God be pleased with him, that he said: Perform a pilgrimage here, then prepare for war here until you perish; meaning to go to war,

قال: الحدج شد الأحمال وتوسيقها؛

He said: Al-ḥadj is the tightening of loads and packing them;

قال الأزهري: معنى قول عمر، رضي الله عنه، ثم احدج هاهنا أي شد الحداجة، وهو القتب بأداته على البعير للغزو؛

Al-Azhari said: The meaning of Umar's saying, may God be pleased with him, 'then prepare for war here' is to tighten the ḥadājah, which is the saddle with its gear on the camel for war;

روي عن ابن مسعود أنه قال: حدث القوم ما حدجوك بأبصارهم أي ما أحدوا النظر إليك؛

It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that he said: Tell the people as long as they fix their gaze upon you, meaning as long as they intently look at you;

وفي حديث المعراج: ألم تروا إلى ميتكم حين يحدج ببصره فإنما ينظر إلى المعراج من حسنه؟

And in the Hadith of the Ascension: Did you not see your dead when he stares with his sight, looking at the Ascension because of its beauty?

وحدجه ببصره: رماه به حدجا.

And ḥadajahu bi-baṣarihi: to cast it at him with a ḥadj.

والتحديج: مثل التحديق.

And al-taḥdīj: is like al-taḥdīq.

وحدجه بسهم يحدجه حدجا: رماه به.
