قال ابن الأثير: الحبج، بفتحتين، هو ما ذكرناه من أكل البعير لحاء العرفج ويسمن عليه، وربما بشم منه فقتله؛ يعرض ببني مروان لكثرة أكلهم وإسرافهم في ملاذ الدنيا، وأنهم يموتون بالتخمة.

Ibn al-Athir said: Al-hubj, with two fatha, is what we mentioned about the camel eating the bark of the 'urfuj and becoming fat from it, and sometimes becoming intoxicated from it and it kills him; he is referring to the sons of Marwan for their excessive eating and extravagance in worldly pleasures, and that they die from overeating.

الأزهري: حبج البعير إذا أكل العرفج فتكبب في بطنه وضاق مبعره عنه ولم يخرج من جوفه، فربما هلك وربما نجا؛

Al-Azhari: The camel bloated when it ate the 'urfuj, its belly becoming distended, its passage for dung constricted, and it could not expel it from its gut; it might perish or survive;

Abu Zayd said: Bloating for a camel is like colic for a human; if he defecates, he recovers, otherwise he dies.

ابن سيده: حبج الرجل حباجا ورم بطنه وارتطم عليه؛

Ibn Sidah: The man's belly swelled and became distended;

وقيل: الحبج الانتفاخ حيثما كان، من ماء أو غيره.

And it was said: Al-hubj is distension wherever it may be, from water or otherwise.
