روى أبو العباس عن ابن الأعرابي وعن عمرو عن أبيه: الجلج رؤوس الناس، واحدها جلجة.
Abu Al-Abbas narrated from Ibn Al-A'rabi and from Amr from his father: Al-jalj is the heads of people, its singular is jaljah.
فالمعنى إنا بقينا في عدد رؤوس كثيرة من المسلمين
So the meaning is that we remained among a large number of heads of Muslims.
وبقينا نحن في عدد من أمثالنا من المسلمين لا ندري ما يصنع بنا.
And we remained among a number of Muslims like ourselves, not knowing what would be done to us.
وقيل: الجلج، في لغة أهل اليمامة، حباب الماء، كأنه يريد تركنا في أمر ضيق كضيق الحباب.
And it was said: Al-jalj, in the language of the people of Yamamah, is the bubbles of water, as if it means we were left in a narrow matter like the narrowness of the bubbles.
وإنا بعد في جلجنا، فلم يزل يكنى بأبي عبد الله حتى هلك.
And we are still in our predicament, so he continued to be called Abu Abdullah until he perished.
أن خذ من كل جلجة من القبط كذا وكذا.
That you take from each head of the Copts such and such.
وقال بعضهم: الجلج جماجم الناس؛ أراد من كل رأس.
And some of them said: Al-jalj is the skulls of people; he meant from each head.
ويقال: على كل جلجة كذا، والجمع جلج.
And it is said: on each head is such and such, and the plural is jalj.
