And al-ta'rīj: is like al-ta'rīsh in war;

إنا إذا مذكي الحروب أرجا

Indeed, when the kindler of wars arj-s (incites).

وأرجت بين القوم تأريجا إذا أغريت بينهم.

And it (war) was incited among the people ta'rījan when you provoked them.

ومننه سمي المؤرج الذهلي جد المؤرج الراوية، وذلك أنه أرج الحرب بين بكر وتغلب.

And from this was named Al-Mu'arrij al-Dhublī, the grandfather of Al-Mu'arrij the narrator, because he incited the war between Bakr and Taghlib.

لما جاء نعي عمر، رضي الله عنه، إلى المدائن أرج الناس أي ضجوا بالبكاء؛

When the news of Umar's death, may God be pleased with him, reached Al-Madā'in, the people arj-ed, meaning they cried out with weeping;

And he arj-ed truth with falsehood, he ya'rujuhu arjan: he mixed it.

وأرج النار وأرثها: أوقدها، مشدد؛

And he arj-ed the fire and arath-ha: he kindled it, intensified;

والأوارجة من كتب أصحاب الدواوين في الخراج ونحوه؛ ويقال: هذا كتاب التأريج.

And al-awārijah are from the writings of the scribes of the diwans concerning the land tax and the like; and it is said: This is the book of al-ta'rīj.

وروجت الأمر فراج يروج روجا إذا أرجته.

And I rōwajtu the matter, so it farāja, yarūju rūjan if I arj-ed it.

أراد الله أن يخزي بجيرا، ... فسلطني عليه بأرجان
