Al-walth: the making of a covenant between people; and it was said: it is the weakness of the bond.
It is said: he made a weak covenant with me, meaning he promised me.
It is said: a small amount of a covenant, meaning a little bit of it.
And al-walth: a covenant that is not firm nor confirmed, and it is the weak one; and from it is the walth of clouds: which is the light dew; and it was said: al-walth is the firm covenant; and it was said: al-walth is a small amount of a covenant.
And in the hadith of Ibn Sirin: he used to dislike buying the captives of Zabul, and he said: Uthman gave them a walth, meaning he gave them something of a covenant;
And it is said: I promised you a weak promise;
And it is said: they have a weak walth and a firm walth;
Al-Jawhari said: Al-walth is a covenant between people that occurs unintentionally and is unconfirmed.
It is said: he made a covenant with him.
And al-walth: a small amount of striking and pain; and it was said: the remainder of it.
And he suffered a light blow, and he struck lightly;
And it was said: al-walth is everything small from a large amount; from Ibn al-A'rabi, and with this he interpreted the saying of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, to the head of the Jews: Were it not for a slight covenant with you, I would have struck your neck, meaning a part of a covenant or a little of it.
As for Tha'lab, he said: Al-walth is the weak of covenants.
Abu Murrah al-Qushayri said: Al-walth is from striking that does not cause a wound, over the clothes.
He said: And a man approached a people seeking a woman who had promised him, and he fell upon a man, and he cried out to him, so the tribe gathered against him and struck him lightly, then he escaped.
And al-walth: the remainder of the dough in the thick stew, and the remainder of the water in the water-skin, and the leftover of the wine that remains in the vessel, which is al-basil.
And al-walth: a small amount of rain.
And we were struck by a walth of rain, meaning a little of it.
And the sky rained a walth upon us, meaning it wet us with a little rain, derived from it.
And al-walth is the remainder of the covenant.
In the hadith: Were it not for a remnant of a covenant with them, I would have done such and such to them.
Ibn Shumayl said: You say you have managed your slave if you say: He is free after my death if you direct him towards emancipation during your life.
He said, and al-walth is the direction if you say: He is free after me, then that is al-walth.
And so-and-so directed us in our affair with a walth, meaning he guided;
Ru'bah said: And I said when I envied a religion and a covenant
And Ibn al-A'rabi said: Meaning permanent, as they make it last by striking.
Al-Asma'i said: Walathahu, meaning he struck him a light blow.
And Al-Asma'i said regarding his saying 'when I envied a religion and a covenant': Ru'bah erred in this because he should have confirmed the matter of the religion.
And others said: It is said a religion and a covenant, meaning he undertakes it as he undertakes a covenant.
