The 'malathah' and 'malath' are the beginning of the darkness of sunset. When it intensifies until the time of the last evening prayer, it is 'malas'. One cannot distinguish this from that because the 'malath' has entered into the 'malas'.
ومثله اختلط الخاثر بالزباد.
And like it is when the curd mixes with the yogurt.

And 'malath' is playfulness.
تضحك ذات الطوق والرعاث ... من عزب، ليس بذي ملاث
