He spoke vulgarly in his speech, 'yarfuthu' 'rafathan', and 'rafath', and 'rafath' (with dammah according to Al-Lihyani), and 'arfath', all mean: he spoke obscenely;
وقيل: أفحش في شأن النساء.
And it was said: he spoke obscenely concerning women.
فلا رفث، ولا فسوق، ولا جدال في الحج
No 'rafath', nor 'fusuq' (wickedness), nor 'jidal' (disputing) during Hajj.
يجوز أن يكون الإفحاش؛

وقال الزجاج: أي لا جماع، ولا كلمة من أسباب الجماع، وأنشد: عن اللغا، ورفث التكلم
And Al-Zajjaj said: meaning no intercourse, and no word that leads to intercourse, and he cited: from idle talk, and vulgar speech.
وقال ثعلب: هو أن لا يأخذ ما عليه من القشف، مثل تقليم الأظفار، ونتف الإبط، وحلق العانة، وما أشبهه، فإن أخذ ذلك كله فليس هنالك رفث.
And Tha'lab said: it is not to remove what is upon one of the grooming practices, such as trimming nails, plucking armpits, shaving pubic hair, and the like; if all of that is done, then there is no 'rafath'.
والرفث: التعريض بالنكاح.
And 'al-rafath' means: alluding to marriage.
وقال غيره: الرفث كلمة جامعة لكل ما يريده الرجل من المرأة
And others said: 'al-rafath' is a comprehensive word for everything a man desires from a woman.
وهن يمشين بنا هميسا، ... إن تصدق الطير ننك لميسا
And they walk with us softly, ... if the bird is truthful, we will have intercourse.
فقيل له: يا أبا العباس، أتقول الرفث وأنت محرم؟
And it was said to him: O Abu Al-Abbas, do you say 'al-rafath' while you are in the state of Ihram?
وفي رواية: أترفث وأنت محرم؟
And in another narration: Do you engage in 'rafath' while you are in the state of Ihram?
فقال: إنما الرفث ما روجع به النساء.
So he said: 'Al-rafath' is only what is said to women in intimacy.
فرأى ابن عباس الرفث الذي نهى الله عنه ما خوطبت به المرأة؛
So Ibn Abbas considered 'al-rafath' which God prohibited to be what is said to a woman;
فأما أن يرفث في كلامه، ولا تسمع امرأة رفثه، فغير داخل في قوله: فلا رفث ولا فسوق.
But as for him speaking vulgarly, and no woman hears his vulgarity, it is not included in His saying: 'No 'rafath', nor 'fusuq'.
