Parallel reading

البغث والبغثة: بياض يضرب إلى الخضرة؛ وقيل: بياض يضرب إلى الحمرة
Al-baghth and al-baghthah: a whiteness that tends towards green; and it was said: a whiteness that tends towards red.
الذكر أبغث، والأنثى بغثاء
The male is abghath, and the female is baghtha'.
والأبغث: طائر غلب عليه غلبة الأسماء، وأصله الصفة للونه
And al-abghath: a bird upon which the name prevailed, and its origin is an adjective for its color.
البغاث والأبغث من طير الماء، كلون الرماد، طويل العنق
Al-baghath and al-abghath are water birds, ash-colored, long-necked.
والجمع البغث والأباغث
And the plural is al-baghth and al-abaghith.
والبغاث، عندي، غير الأبغث
And al-baghath, in my opinion, is different from al-abghath.
فأما الأبغث، فهو من طير الماء، معروف، وسمي أبغث لبغثته، وهو بياض إلى الخضرة
As for al-abghath, it is a known water bird, and it was named abghath because of its baghthah, which is a whiteness towards green.
وأما البغاث: فكل طائر ليس من جوارح الطير؛ يقال: هو اسم للجنس من الطير الذي يصاد
And as for al-baghath: it is every bird that is not a bird of prey; it is said: it is a generic noun for birds that are hunted.
وبغاث الطير وبغاثها: ألائمها وشرارها، وما لا يصيد منها، واحدتها بغاثة، بالفتح، الذكر والأنثى في ذلك سواء
And baghath al-tayr and its baghath: its inferior and worst birds, and those that are not hunted, its singular is baghathah (with fatha), male and female are the same in this.
وفي حديث جعفر بن عمرو: رأيت وحشيا، فإذا شيخ مثل البغاثة : هي الضعيف من الطير، وجمعها بغاث
And in the hadith of Ja'far bin Amr: I saw a wild animal, and there was an old man like al-baghathah: it is the weak among birds, and its plural is baghath.
وفي حديث عطاء: في بغاث الطير مد أي إذا صاده المحرم
And in the hadith of Atta: in baghath al-tayr is a ram (a fine) if it is hunted by a pilgrim in ihram.
والبغاث طائر أبيض، وقيل: أبغث إلى الغبرة، بطيء الطيران، صغير دوين الرخمة
And al-baghath is a white bird, and it was said: abghath towards ash-grey, slow-flying, smaller than a vulture.
والبغاث ما لا يصيد من الطير، وأما الأبغث من الطير، فهو ما كان لونه أغبر، وقد يكون صائدا وغير صائد
And al-baghath is what is not hunted among birds, but al-abghath among birds is what is ash-colored, and it may be predatory or non-predatory.
فجعل الأبغث صفة لما كان صائدا أو غير صائد، بخلاف البغاث الذي لا يكون منه شيء صائدا
So he made al-abghath an adjective for what is predatory or non-predatory, unlike al-baghath, none of which is predatory.
وقيل: البغاث أولاد الرخم والغربان
And it was said: al-baghath are the young of vultures and crows.
والبغثاء من الضأن، مثل الرقطاء: وهي التي فيها سواد وبياض، وبياضها أكثر من سوادها
And al-baghtha' from sheep, like al-raqtaa': it is that which has black and white, and its whiteness is more than its blackness.
والبغيث: الطعام المخلوط يغش بالشعير كاللغيث
And al-bagheeth: mixed food adulterated with barley, like al-lagheeth.
ودخل في بغثاء الناس وبرشاء الناس أي جماعتهم
And he entered into baghtha' al-nas and barsha' al-nas, meaning their multitude.
الليث: يوم بغاث: يوم وقعة كانت بين الأوس والخزرج؛ قال الأزهري: إنما هو بعاث، بالعين، وقد مر تفسيره
Al-Layth: Yawm Baghath: a day of a battle that occurred between the Aws and Khazraj; Al-Azhari said: it is actually Yawm Bu'ath (with 'ayn), and its explanation has passed.
إن البغاث بأرضنا يستنسر يضرب مثلا للئيم يرتفع أمره
Indeed, the common birds in our land become eagles is a proverb for a base person whose status is elevated.
والبغاث الطير الذي يصاد ويستنسر أي يصير كالنسر الذي يصيد ولا يصاد
And al-baghath is the bird that is hunted and becomes like an eagle, meaning it becomes like the eagle that hunts and is not hunted.
