And in the Noble Qur'an: 'They do not call upon besides Him except females' (4:117); and it was read: 'illa unthan', a plural of 'inath', like 'tammar' and 'tamr'.

And whoever reads 'illa inathan', it is said: he meant inanimate things like stones, wood, trees, and the lifeless, all of which are referred to as feminine.

Al-Farra' said: The Arabs say: Al-Lat, Al-'Uzza, and their like among the feminine deities.
وقرأ ابن عباس: إن يدعون من دونه إلا أثنا ؛ قال الفراء: هو جمع الوثن فضم الواو وهمزها.
And Ibn 'Abbas read: 'illa athana'; Al-Farra' said: it is a plural of 'wathan' (idol), with a damma on the waw and a hamza.

And 'al-mu'annath': mentioned in the creation of a female.
وإذا قلت للشيء تؤنثه، فالنعت بالهاء، مثل المرأة، فإذا قلت يؤنث، فالنعت مثل الرجل بغير هاء، كقولك مؤنثة ومؤنث.
And if you say of something 'tu'annithuhu' (you make it feminine), the adjective is with 'haa', like 'imra'ah' (woman); and if you say 'yu'annath' (it is made feminine), the adjective is like 'rajul' (man) without 'haa', as you say 'mu'annathah' and 'mu'annath'.
ويقال للرجل: أنثت تأنيثا أي لنت له، ولم تتشدد.
And it is said of a man: 'anthatta ta'nithan', meaning he became gentle towards him and did not become harsh.
وبعضهم يقول: تأنث في أمره وتخنث.
And some say: 'ta'annatha fi amrihi wa takhanthatha', meaning he acted effeminately in his affair.
والأنيث من الرجال: المخنث، شبه المرأة؛
And 'al-aneeth' among men: the effeminate, resembling a woman.
والتأنيث: خلاف التذكير، وهي الأناثة.
And 'al-ta'neeth': the opposite of masculinization, and it is 'al-anathah'.
ويقال: هذه امرأة أنثى إذا مدحت بأنها كاملة من النساء، كما يقال: رجل ذكر إذا وصف بالكمال.
And it is said: 'This is a woman 'untha' if she is praised for being perfect among women, just as it is said: 'a man 'dhakar' if he is described with perfection'.
ابن السكيت: يقال هذا طائر وأنثاه، ولا يقال: وأنثاته.
Ibn al-Sikkit said: It is said 'this is a bird and its female', and it is not said: 'and its females'.
وتأنيث الاسم: خلاف تذكيره؛ وقد أنثته، فتأنث.
And 'ta'neeth al-ism': the opposite of its masculinization; and you have 'annattahu' (made it feminine), so it 'ta'annatha' (became feminine).
والأنثيان: الخصيتان، وهما أيضا الأذنان، يمانية؛
And 'al-unthiyyan': the testicles, and they are also the ears, a Yemenite usage.
وكنا، إذا القيسي نب عتوده، ... ضربناه فوق الأنثيين على الكرد
And we were, when the Qaisi's enemy roared... we struck him above the testicles on the neck.

Her thighs stretched with sweat, ... like an old man slurping broth.
عنت بأنثييها: ربلتي فخذيها.
'Anat bi-unthayyayha': her thigh muscles became plump.
والأنثيان: من أحياء العرب بجيلة وقضاعة، عن أبي العميثل الأعرابي؛
And 'Al-Unthiyyan': are among the Arab tribes of Bajila and Quda'a, from Abu al-'Umaythil al-A'rabi.
وآنثت المرأة، وهي مؤنث: ولدت الإناث؛ فإن كان ذلك لها عادة، فهي مئناث، والرجل مئناث أيضا، لأنهما يستويان في مفعال.
And 'aanthatat al-mar'ah', and she is 'mu'annath': she gave birth to females; if that was her habit, she is 'mi'nath', and the man is also 'mi'nath', because they are equal in the 'mifa'al' pattern.
المئناث: التي تلد الإناث كثيرا، كالمذكار: التي تلد الذكور.
'Al-mi'nath': she who gives birth to females often, like 'al-midhkar': he who sires males.
وأرض مئناث وأنيثة: سهلة منبتة، خليقة بالنبات، ليست بغليظة؛ وفي الصحاح: تنبت البقل سهلة.
And 'ardun mi'nath' and 'aneethah': easy to grow, suited for plants, not coarse; and in Al-Sihah: it grows grass easily.
وبلد أنيث: لين سهل؛ حكاه ابن الأعرابي.
And 'baladun aneeth': soft and easy; narrated by Ibn al-A'rabi.
ومكان أنيث إذا أسرع نباته وكثر؛ قال امرؤ القيس:
And 'makanun aneeth' if its vegetation is fast and abundant; Imru' al-Qays said:
بميث أنيث في رياض دميثة، ... يحيل سوافيها بماء فضيض
In a soft place, fertile in lush gardens, ... its streams flow with abundant water.
ومن كلامهم: بلد دميث أنيث طيب الريعة، مرت العود.
And from their sayings: a soft, fertile land, good for grazing, where the scent of oud passes.
وزعم ابن الأعرابي أن المرأة إنما سميت أنثى، من البلد الأنيث، قال: لأن المرأة ألين من الرجل، وسميت أنثى للينها.
And Ibn al-A'rabi claimed that a woman is only called 'untha' from the 'balad al-aneeth' (soft land), saying: because a woman is softer than a man, and she was named 'untha' for her softness.
والأنيث: ما كان من الحديد غير ذكر.
And 'al-aneeth': that which is made of iron and is not 'dhakar' (male/sharp).
وحديد أنيث: غير ذكير.
And 'hadeedun aneeth': not sharp.
والأنيث من السيوف: الذي من حديد غير ذكر؛ وقيل: هو نحو من الكهام؛ قال صخر الغي:
And 'al-aneeth' of swords: that which is made of non-sharp iron; and it was said: it is akin to 'alkiham' (dull swords); Sakhr al-Ghay said:
فيعلمه بأن العقل عندي ... جراز، لا أفل، ولا أنيث
So he knows that wisdom with me ... is decisive, not failing, and not dull.
وما يستوي سيفان: سيف مؤنث، ... وسيف، إذا ما عض بالعظم صمما
And two swords are not equal: a dull sword, ... and a sword that, when it bites bone, becomes blunt.
وسيف أنيث: وهو الذي ليس بقاطع.
And 'sayfun aneeth': which is one that does not cut.
وسيف مئناث ومئناثة، بالهاء، عن اللحياني إذا كانت حديدته لينة، تأنيثه على إرادة الشفرة، أو الحديدة، أو السلاح.
And 'sayfun mi'nath' and 'mi'nathah', with 'haa', from Al-Lihyani, if its blade is soft, its feminization is by intending the edge, or the blade, or the weapon.
الأصمعي: الذكر من السيوف شفرته حديد ذكر، ومتناه أنيث، يقول الناس إنها من عمل الجن ؛
Al-Asma'i said: The male of swords, its edge is sharp iron, and its end is dull, people say it is from the work of jinn.
وروى إبراهيم النحعي أنه قال: كانوا يكرهون المؤنث من الطيب، ولا يرون بذكورته بأسا ؛
And Ibrahim al-Nakha'i narrated that he said: They used to dislike 'al-mu'annath' (feminine) perfumes, and saw no harm in 'dhukooratuhu' (masculine ones).
قال شمر: أراد بالمؤنث طيب النساء، مثل الخلوق والزعفران، وما يلون الثياب، وأما ذكورة الطيب، فما لا لون له، مثل الغالية والكافور والمسك والعود والعنبر، ونحوها من الأدهان التي لا تؤثر.
Shamir said: By 'al-mu'annath', he meant perfumes for women, like 'khuluq' and saffron, and what dyes clothes; as for 'dhukoorat al-teeb', it is what has no color, like 'ghaliyah', camphor, musk, oud, amber, and similar oils that do not stain.
