And Sibawayh used the word 'waqt' for place, by analogy with time, because it is a similar measure.

And the plural is 'awqat', and it is 'al-miqat'.
إن الصلاة كانت على المؤمنين كتابا موقوتا
Indeed, prayer has been a prescribed ordinance for the believers at fixed times.
أي مؤقتا مقدرا
Meaning, timed and measured.
وقيل: أي كتبت عليهم في أوقات موقتة
And it was said: Meaning, it was prescribed for them at appointed times.
والميقات: الوقت المضروب للفعل والموضع
And 'al-miqat' is the appointed time for an action and the place.
يقال: هذا ميقات أهل الشأم، للموضع الذي يحرمون منه
It is said: This is the 'miqat' of the people of Sham, referring to the place from which they enter the state of Ihram.
فالتوقيت والتأقيت: أن يجعل للشيء وقت يختض به، وهو بيان مقدار المدة
So 'al-tawqit' and 'al-ta'qit' mean to set a specific time for something, which is the indication of the duration.
وقت الشيء يوقته، ووقته يقته إذا بين حده
He timed a thing, he sets its time, and he timed it, he defined its limit.
فقيل للموضع: ميقات، وهو مفعال منه، وأصله موقات، فقلبت الواو ياء لكسرة الميم
So the place was called 'miqat', and it is a 'mif'al' form from it, and its origin is 'mawqat', so the 'waw' was changed to 'ya' due to the kasra on the 'mim'.
لم يقت رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، في الخمر حدا أي لم يقدر، ولم يحده بعدد مخصوص
The Messenger of God, peace be upon him, did not set a limit for wine, meaning he did not estimate it, nor did he limit it to a specific number.
والآخرة: ميقات الخلق
And the Hereafter is the appointed time for creation.
ومواضع الإحرام: مواقيت الحاج
And the places of Ihram are the 'mawaqit' of the pilgrims.
والهلال: ميقات الشهر، ونحو ذلك كذلك
And the crescent moon is the 'miqat' of the month, and similar things are likewise.
وقته ليوم كذا مثل أجلته
He set a time for it for such-and-such a day, like he set a deadline for it.
والجامع الناس ليوم الموقت

وإذا الرسل أقتت
