He said: and the 'na't' horse is that which is the utmost in purity of lineage.

ولقد نعت ينعت نعاتة؛ فإذا أردت أنه تكلف فعله، قلت: نعت.

And he was excellent, describing excellently, with excellence; and if you want to mean that he exerted effort in doing it, you say: 'na't'.

يقال: فرس نعت ونعتة، ونعيتة ونعيت: عتيقة، وقد نعتت نعاتة.

It is said: a horse 'na't' and 'na'tah', and 'na'iytah' and 'na'iyt': excellent (old/purebred), and it possessed excellence.

وفرس نعت ومنتعت إذا كان موصوفا بالعتق والجودة والسبق؛ قال الأخطل: إذا غرق الآل الإكام علونه ... بمنتعتات، لا بغال ولا حمر

And a horse 'na't' and 'munt'at' if it was described with purity of lineage, excellence, and precedence; Al-Akhtal said: When the mirage drowned the mounds, their tops shone ... with excellent ones, not mules nor donkeys.

والمنتعت من الدواب والناس: الموصوف بما يفضله على غيره من جنسه، وهو مفتعل، من النعت.

And the 'munt'at' among animals and people: is that which is described with what makes it superior to others of its kind, and it is 'muf'tal', from 'na't'.

يقال: نعته فانتعت، كما يقال: وصفته فاتصف؛ ومنه قول أبي دواد الإيادي: جار كجار الحذاقي الذي اتصفا

It is said: you described him and he became described, just as it is said: you described him and he became characterized; and from this is the saying of Abu Dawad al-Iyadi: A neighbor like the neighbor of al-Hadhdhaqi who became characterized.

قال ابن الأعرابي: أنعت إذا حسن وجهه حتى ينعت.

Ibn al-A'rabi said: 'an'ata' means to have a beautiful face to the point it can be described.

وفي صفته، صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول ناعته: لم أر قبله ولا بعده مثله.

And in his description, peace be upon him, his describer says: I have not seen before him or after him the like of him.

قال ابن الأثير: النعت وصف الشيء بما فيه من حسن، ولا يقال في القبيح إلا أن يتكلف متكلف، فيقول نعت سوء؛ والوصف يقال في الحسن والقبيح.

Ibn al-Athir said: 'Na't' is describing something with the beauty it possesses, and it is not said for the ugly except if someone makes an effort, saying 'na't suu' (a bad description); and 'wasf' (description) is said for both the good and the ugly.

وناعتـون وناعتين، جميعا: موضع؛ وقول الراعي: حي الديار، ديار أم بشير، ... بنويعتين، فشاطئ التسرير إنما أراد ناعتين «2»، فصغره.

And 'na'ituun' and 'na'itiin', both: a place; and the saying of Al-Ra'i: 'O dwelling places, dwelling places of Umm Bishir, ... in Nuway'atayn, and the shore of al-Tasriir', he only intended 'Na'itayn', so he made it diminutive.
