القوت: ما يمسك الرمق من الرزق.
Sustenance: that which sustains life from provisions.
ابن سيده: القوت، والقيت، والقيتة، والقائت: المسكة من الرزق.
Ibn Sidah said: Al-qūt, al-qayt, al-qayta, and al-qā'it: the sustenance from provisions.
هو ما يقوم به بدن الإنسان من الطعام؛
It is what sustains a person's body from food;
ما عنده قوت ليلة، وقيت ليلة، وقيتة ليلة؛
He does not have enough food for one night, nor sustenance for one night, nor a portion for one night;
فلما كسرت القاف صارت الواو ياء، وهي البلغة؛
And when the Qaf was vocalized with kasra, the Waw became a Ya, and it is the sufficiency;
وما عليه قوت ولا قوات،
And he has no sustenance nor provisions,
القوت: مصدر قات يقوت قوتا وقياتة.
Al-qūt: is the masdar of qāta, yuqūtu, qūtan and qiyātatan.
وقال ابن سيده: قاته ذلك قوتا وقوتا، الأخيرة عن سيبويه.
And Ibn Sidah said: He provided him with sustenance, qūtan and qūtan, the latter from Sibawayh.
وتقوت بالشيء، واقتات به واقتاته: جعله قوته.
And he made something his sustenance, and he took it as sustenance and consumed it: he made it his food.
وحكى ابن الأعرابي: أن الاقتيات هو القوت، جعله اسما له.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi narrated: that al-iqtiyāt is al-qūt, making it a noun for it.
يقتات فضل سنامها الرحل
The saddle consumes the excess fat of its hump
قال: عندي أن يقتاته هنا يأكله، فيجعله قوتا لنفسه؛
He said: In my opinion, 'yaqtātuhu' here means he eats it, making it sustenance for himself;
وأما ابن الأعرابي فقال: معناه يذهب به شيئا بعد شيء،
As for Ibn Al-A'rabi, he said: its meaning is to take it away little by little,
قال: ولا أدري أتأول منه، أم سماع سمعه؛
He said: And I do not know if it is an interpretation from him, or something he heard;
قال: هو من قوله: يقتات فضل سنامها الرحل
He said: It is from his saying: 'The saddle consumes the excess fat of its hump'
قال: والاقتيات والقوت واحد.
He said: And al-iqtiyāt and al-qūt are one.
أراد بنفسه روحه؛ والمعنى: أنه يقبض روحه، نفسا بعد نفس، حتى يتوفاه كله؛
He meant by his soul his spirit; and the meaning is: that he takes his soul, breath by breath, until he takes it all;
أي يأخذ الرحل، وأنا راكبه، شحم سنام الناقة قليلا قليلا، حتى لا يبقى منه شيء، لأنه ينضيها.
Meaning, the saddle takes, while I am riding it, the fat of the camel's hump little by little, until nothing remains of it, because it weakens it.
وأنا أقوته أي أعوله برزق قليل.
And I provide him with sustenance, meaning I support him with a little provision.
وقته فاقتات، كما تقول رزقته فارتزق، وهو في قائت من العيش أي في كفاية.
He provided him with sustenance, so he took it as sustenance, just as you say 'He provided him with sustenance, so he received sustenance', and he is in a state of sustenance from living, meaning in sufficiency.
واستقاته: سأله القوت؛
And istiqātahu: he asked him for sustenance;
وفلان يتقوت بكذا.
And so-and-so lives on such-and-such.
اللهم اجعل رزق آل محمد قوتا أي بقدر ما يمسك الرمق من المطعم.
O Allah, make the provision of the family of Muhammad sustenance, meaning enough to sustain life from food.
وجعل لكل منهم قيتة مقسومة من رزقه ، هي فعلة من القوت، كميتة من الموت.
And He made for each of them a determined portion of His provision, it is a 'fa'la' from al-qūt, like 'fayta' from al-mawt.
ونفخ في النار نفخا قوتا، واقتات لها: كلاهما رفق بها.
And he blew into the fire a gentle blowing, and he fed it: both mean to be gentle with it.
واقتت لنارك قيتة أي أطعمها؛
And feed your fire a portion, meaning feed it;
فقلت له: خذها إليك، وأحيها ... بروحك، واقتته لها قيتة قدرا
So I said to him: Take it to you, and give it life ... with your spirit, and feed it a measured portion.
وإذا نفخ نافخ في النار، قيل له: انفخ نفخا قوتا، واقتت لها نفخك قيتة؛ يأمره بالرفق والنفخ القليل.
And if someone blows into the fire, it is said to him: blow a gentle blow, and feed your blowing to it as a portion; commanding him to be gentle and to blow little.
وأقات الشيء وأقات عليه: أطاقه؛
And aqāta the thing and aqāta upon it: he endured it;
وبما أستفيد، ثم أقيت المال، ... إني امرؤ مقيت مفيد
And with what I gain, then I can endure the wealth, ... Indeed, I am a person who can endure and benefit.
المقيت، هو الحفيظ، وقيل: المقتدر، وقيل: هو الذي يعطي أقوات الخلائق؛
Al-Muqīt, He is the Preserver, and it is said: the All-Powerful, and it is said: He is the one who gives sustenance to His creation;
وهو من أقاته يقيته إذا أعطاه قوته.
And it is from aqātahu yuqītuhu if he gives him his sustenance.
وأقاته أيضا: إذا حفظه.
And aqātahu also: if he preserves him.
وكان الله على كل شيء مقيتا .
And Allah is ever, over all things, a Keeper (or Controller/Provider).
الفراء: المقيت المقتدر والمقدر، كالذي يعطي كل شيء قوته.
Al-Farra': Al-Muqīt is the All-Powerful and the Determiner, like the one who gives everything its sustenance.
وقال الزجاج: المقيت القدير، وقيل: الحفيظ؛
And Al-Zajjaj said: Al-Muqīt is the All-Powerful, and it is said: the Preserver;
وهو بالحفيظ أشبه، لأنه مشتق من القوت.
And it is more like the Preserver, because it is derived from al-qūt.
يقال: قت الرجل أقوته قوتا إذا حفظت نفسه بما يقوته.
It is said: The man sustained himself with sustenance if his soul was preserved by what sustains him.
والقوت: اسم الشيء الذي يحفظ نفسه، ولا فضل فيه على قدر الحفظ،
And al-qūt: is the name of the thing that preserves itself, and there is no excess in it beyond the measure of preservation,
فمعنى المقيت: الحفيظ الذي يعطي الشيء قدر الحاجة، من الحفظ؛
So the meaning of Al-Muqīt: is the Preserver who gives a thing according to its need, from preservation;
وقال الفراء: المقيت المقتدر، كالذي يعطي كل رجل قوته.
And Al-Farra' said: Al-Muqīt is the All-Powerful, like the one who gives every man his sustenance.
ويقال: المقيت الحافظ للشيء والشاهد له؛
And it is said: Al-Muqīt is the preserver of a thing and its witness;
إني على الحساب مقيت أي أعرف ما عملت من السوء، لأن الإنسان على نفسه بصيرة.
I am aware of the reckoning, meaning I know the evil I have done, because a person is a witness against himself.
ربي على الحساب مقيت
My Lord is aware of the reckoning
لأن الخاضع لربه لا يصف نفسه بهذه الصفة.
Because the one who submits to his Lord does not describe himself with this attribute.
لأنه بنى على أن مقيتا بمعنى مقتدر،
Because he based it on 'muqītan' meaning 'all-powerful',
ولو ذهب مذهب من يقول إنه الحافظ للشيء والشاهد له، كما ذكر الجوهري، لم ينكر الرواية الأولة.
And if he followed the opinion of one who says it means the preserver of a thing and its witness, as Al-Jawhari mentioned, he would not have denied the first narration.
إن المقيت بمعنى الحافظ والحفيظ، لأنه مشتق من القوت أي مأخوذ من قولهم: قت الرجل أقوته إذا حفظت نفسه بما يقوته.
That Al-Muqīt means the Preserver and the Guardian, because it is derived from al-qūt, meaning taken from their saying: 'The man sustained himself with sustenance if his soul was preserved by what sustains him.'
والقوت: اسم الشيء الذي يحفظ نفسه،
And al-qūt: is the name of the thing that preserves itself,
فمعنى المقيت على هذا: الحفيظ الذي يعطي الشيء على قدر الحاجة، من الحفظ؛
So the meaning of Al-Muqīt on this basis: is the Guardian who gives a thing according to its need, from preservation;
وعلى هذا فسر قوله عز وجل: وكان الله على كل شيء مقيتا أي حفيظا.
And on this basis, he interpreted the saying of Allah the Almighty: 'And Allah is ever, over all things, a Keeper' meaning a Guardian.
وقيل في تفسير بيت السموأل: إني على الحساب مقيت؛ أي موقوف على الحساب؛
And it was said in explanation of Al-Samaw'al's verse: 'I am aware of the reckoning'; meaning, I am held accountable for the reckoning;
ثم بعد الممات ينشرني من ... هو على النشر، يا بني، مقيت
Then after death, He will resurrect me, He ... who is, O my son, All-Powerful over the resurrection
المقيت، عند العرب، الموقوف على الشيء.
Al-Muqīt, among the Arabs, is the one who is in charge of a thing.
وأقات على الشيء: اقتدر عليه.
And aqāta upon a thing: he became capable of it.
ذي ضغن كففت النفس عنه، ... وكنت على مساءته مقيتا «1»
Of one with malice, I restrained myself from him, ... And I was capable of harming him.
كفى بالمرء إثما أن يضيع من يقوت ؛
It is enough for a man to be sinful that he neglects those whom he sustains;
أراد من يلزمه نفقته من أهله وعياله وعبيده؛
He meant those for whom he is obligated to provide sustenance from his family, his dependents, and his slaves;
ويروى: من يقيت، على اللغة الأخرى.
And it is narrated: 'from whom he sustains', according to the other dialect.
قوتوا طعامكم يبارك لكم فيه ؛
Moderate your food (consumption) so that it may be blessed for you;
فقال: هو صغر الأرغفة؛
He said: It is the smallness of the loaves;
وقال غيره: هو مثل قوله: كيلوا طعامكم.
And others said: It is like his saying: 'Measure your food.'
