The two things differed, meaning the distance between them increased, tafawutan, with damma on the waw.
فال أولى قراءة أبي عمرو؛ قال قتادة: المعنى من اختلاف؛ وقال السدي: من تفوت: من عيب
The first is the reading of Abu Amr; Qatada said: the meaning is difference; Al-Suddi said: tafawwut means defect.
وهذا الأمر لا يفتات أي لا يفوت
And this matter is not acted upon without consultation, meaning it is not missed.
وافتات عليه في الأمر: حكم
And he acted without consultation regarding the matter: he judged.
وكل من أحدث دونك شيئا: فقد فاتك به، وافتات عليك فيه
And whoever does something without your knowledge: he has surpassed you with it, and acted without consultation regarding it.
فإنك، بالملامة، لن تفاتي
Indeed, you, with blame, will not escape.
وفلان لا يفتات عليه أي لا يعمل شيء دون أمره
And so-and-so is not acted upon without his command, meaning nothing is done without his order.
أم مثلي يفتات عليه في أمر بناته؟
Would someone like me have action taken regarding my daughters without my consultation?
يا حر أمسيت شيخا قد وهى بصري، ... وافتيت، ما دون يوم البعث، من عمري
O Harith, you have become an old man whose sight has weakened, ... and I have acted independently, from my life, until the Day of Resurrection.

And al-ifti'at is completion.
افتات عليه بأمر كذا أي فاته به
He acted independently regarding such-and-such a matter, meaning he surpassed him with it.
وتفوت عليه في ماله أي فاته به
And he acted independently concerning his wealth, meaning he surpassed him with it.
إن رجلا تفوت على أبيه في ماله
A man acted independently concerning his father's wealth.
فإنه وما في يده تحت يدك، وفي ملكتك، فليس له أن يستبد بأمر دونك
For indeed, he and what is in his hand are under your hand, and under your possession, so he does not have the right to act independently concerning a matter without you.
وهو من الفوت السبق
And it is from al-fawt, meaning precedence.
ولما ضمن معنى التغلب عدي بعلى
And when it included the meaning of overcoming, it was made transitive with 'ala.
لو شهدتنا لأخبرناك، وحدثناك بما كان، فقال لها: لن تفاتي، فهاتي
If you had witnessed us, we would have informed you and told you what happened, so he said to her: You will not escape, so give it to me.
والفوت: الخلل والفرجة بين الأصابع، والجمع أفوات
And the fawt: the defect and the gap between the fingers, and the plural is afwat.
وهو مني فوت اليد أي قدر ما يفوت يدي
And it is from me the span of a hand, meaning the amount that escapes my hand.
جعل الله رزقك فوت فمك أي تنظر إليه قدر ما يفوت فمك، ولا تقدر عليه
May Allah make your sustenance such that it is just beyond your mouth, meaning you look at it the amount that escapes your mouth, and you cannot reach it.
وهو مني فوت الرمح أي حيث لا يبلغه
And it is from me the reach of a spear, meaning where it cannot reach it.
إني أكره موت الفوات ، يعني موت الفجاءة
I dislike sudden death, meaning unexpected death.
أخاف موت الفوات
I fear sudden death.
وهو أخذة الأسف، وهو الوحي؛ ويقال: مات فلان موت الفوات أي فوجئ
And it is a seizure of regret, and it is a revelation; and it is said: So-and-so died a sudden death, meaning he was taken by surprise.
