ويقال للشجرة نفسها: زيتونة، ولثمرتها: زيتونة، والجمع: الزيتون، وللدهن الذي يستخرج منه: زيت.
And the tree itself is called: زيتونة, and its fruit: زيتونة, and the plural: الزيتون, and for the fat extracted from it: زيت.
ويقال للذي يبيع الزيت: زيات، وللذي يعتصره: زيات.
And he who sells oil is called: زيات, and he who presses it: زيات.
قال الأصمعي: حدثني عبد الملك بن صالح بن علي، قال: تبقى الزيتونة ثلاثة آلاف سنة.
Al-Asma'i said: 'Abd al-Malik ibn Salih ibn Ali told me, he said: The olive tree remains for three thousand years.
وزت الثريد والطعام أزيته زيتا، فهو مزيت، على النقص، ومزيوت، على التمام: عملته بالزيت؛
And he prepared the thareed and the food, he prepared it with oil, so it is مزيت (oiled, incompletely), and مزيوت (oiled, completely): he made it with oil;
ولا حنطة الشأم المزيت خميرها
Nor the wheat of Sham whose dough is prepared with oil.
اللحياني: زت الخبز والفتوت لتته بزيت.
Al-Laythiyani: He prepared the bread and the small pieces of bread by adding oil to them.
وزت رأسي ورأس فلان: دهنته بالزيت.
And he oiled my head and so-and-so's head: I anointed it with oil.
وازت به: ادهنت.
And he anointed himself with it: he applied oil to himself.
وزت القوم: جعلت أديمهم الزيت.
And he oiled the people: I made their skin oil.
وزيتهم إذا زودتهم الزيت.
And he provided them with oil if I supplied them with oil.
وزات القوم يزيتهم زيتا: أطعمهم الزيت؛
And he fed the people oil: he gave them oil to eat;
وأزاتوا: كثر عندهم الزيت، عنه أيضا، قال: وكذلك كل شيء من هذا إذا أردت أطعمتهم، أو وهبت لهم، قلته: فعلتهم، وإذا أردت أن ذلك قد كثر عندهم، قلت: قد أفعلوا.
And they had abundant oil: oil became plentiful with them, also from him, he said: And so it is with everything of this kind, if you mean you fed them, or gave them, you say: I did it to them, and if you mean that it has become plentiful with them, you say: It has become plentiful for them.
وازدات فلان إذا ادهن بالزيت، وهو مزدات؛
And so-and-so anointed himself if he applied oil to himself, and he is مزدات (anointed);
وتصغيره بتمامه: مزيتيت.
And its diminutive is, in its entirety: مزيتيت.
وجاؤوا يستزيتون أي يستوهبون الزيت.
And they came asking for oil, meaning they were begging for oil.
