الخريت: الماهر الذي يهتدي لأخرات المفاوز، وهي طرقها الخفية ومضايقها؛
The khirrit: the expert who finds his way to the akharat of the deserts, which are their hidden paths and narrow passages;
وقيل: أراد أنه يهتدي في مثل ثقب الإبرة من الطريق.
And it was said: he meant that he finds his way through a path like the eye of a needle.
دليل خريت بريت إذا كان ماهرا بالدلالة، مأخوذ من الخرت، وإنما سمي خريتا، لشقه المفازة.
A khirrit barrit guide if he is skilled in navigation, derived from al-khart, and he is only called khirrit because he splits the desert.
وطريق مخرت ومثقب إذا كان مستقيما بينا، وطرق مخارت؛
And a makhart and mithqab road if it is straight and clear, and makharit paths;
وسمي الدليل خريتا، لأنه يدل على المخرت؛
And the guide is named khirrit because he leads to the makhart;
ويقال: هذه الطريق تخرت بك إلى موضع كذا وكذا أي تقصد بك.
And it is said: this road leads you to such and such a place, meaning it intends you.
والخرت: ضلع صغيرة عند الصدر، وجمعه أخرات؛
And the khart: small ribs near the chest, and its plural is akharat;
ووطي محال كالحني خلوفه، ... وأخراته لزت بدأي منضد
And the bending of flanks like the bending of its hindquarters, ... and its akharat are attached to a well-arranged saddle.
