Al-yalab is the shield; and it is said: the cuirass; and it is said: they are the helmets, made from camel hides, and they were straps that were made and woven, and placed on heads instead of helmets; and it is said: they are hides sewn together, worn specifically on the heads, not on the bodies; and it is said: they are hides worn like armor; and it is said: hides from which armor is made, and it is a collective noun, the singular of all that is 'yalabah'.
واليلب: الفولاذ من الحديد؛ قال: ومحور أخلص من ماء اليلب
And al-yalab: steel from iron; he said: and an axle purer than the water of al-yalab
اليلب خالص الحديد؛ قال عمرو بن كلثوم: علينا البيض، واليلب اليماني، ... وأسياف يقمن، وينحنينا
Al-yalab is pure iron; Amr ibn Kulthum said: Upon us are the helmets, and the Yemeni al-yalab, ... and swords that stand firm and bend.
ومحور أخلص من ماء اليلب
And an axle purer than the water of al-yalab
ويقال: اليلب كل ما كان من جنن الجلود، ولم يكن من الحديد.
And it is said: Al-yalab is everything that is a covering of hides, and not of iron.
ومننه قيل للدرق: يلب؛ وقال: عليهم كل سابغة دلاص، ... وفي أيديهم اليلب المدار
And from this, the cuirass is called 'yalab'; and he said: Upon them every long, shining coat of mail, ... and in their hands the circular 'yalab'.
واليلب، في الأصل، اسم ذلك الجلد؛ قال أبو دهبل الجمحي: درعي دلاص، شكها شك عجب، ... وجوبها القاتر من سير اليلب
And al-yalab, in origin, is the name of that hide; Abu Dahbal al-Jumahi said: My coat of mail is shining, its stitching is wondrous stitching, ... and its protection is the barrier from the wearing of al-yalab.
