وقد اتأب الرجل من الشيء يتئب، فهو متئب: استحيا، افتعال؛ قال الأعشى يمدح هوذة بن علي الحنفي:
And a man 'itta'aba' from a thing (yata'ibu), so he is 'muta'ib': he felt shy, an 'ifti'āl' form; Al-A'sha said, praising Hudha ibn 'Ali al-Hanafi:
من يلق هوذة يسجد غير متئب، ... إذا تعمم فوق التاج، أو وضعا
Whoever meets Hudha prostrates without shyness... when he wears a turban over the crown, or takes it off.
وهو افتعال، من الإبة والوأب.
And it is an 'ifti'āl' form, from 'al-ibah' and 'al-wa'ab'.
وقد وأب يئب إذا أنف، وأوأبت الرجل إذا فعلت به فعلا يستحيا منه؛ وأنشد شمر:
And he 'wa'aba' (ya'ibbu) if he is disdainful, and I 'wa'abtu-tu-hu' if I did something to a man that causes him shame; and Shamir recited:
وإني لكيء عن الموئبات، ... إذا ما الرطيء انمأى مرتؤه
And indeed I am disdainful of shameful things... when the fool's foolishness grows.
الرطيء: الأحمق. مرتؤه: حمقه.
Al-Raṭī': the fool. Martu'uhu: his foolishness.
ووأب: غضب، وأوأبته أنا.
And 'wa'aba': he was angry, and I 'wa'abtu-hu'.
والوأبة، بالباء، المقاربة الخلق.
And 'al-wa'abah', with a 'b', is nearness of build.
