Abu Ishaq said: The naqīb in language is like a trusted one and a guarantor.
ويقال: نقب الرجل على القوم ينقب نقابة، مثل كتب يكتب كتابة، فهو نقيب
And it is said: The man oversaw the people, investigating their affairs, like kataba yaktubu kitābatan, so he is a naqīb.
وما كان الرجل نقيبا، ولقد نقب
And the man was not a chief, and indeed he was a chief.
قال الفراء: إذا أردت أنه لم يكن نقيبا ففعل، قلت: نقب، بالضم، نقابة، بالفتح
Al-Farra' said: If you mean that he was not a chief and he did (something), you say: naqaba (with damma), naqābatan (with fatha).
قال سيبويه: النقابة، بالكسر، الاسم، وبالفتح المصدر، مثل الولاية والولاية
Sibawayh said: Al-niqābatu (with kasra) is the noun, and al-niqābata (with fatha) is the masdar, like al-wilāyatu and al-wilāyata.
وكان من النقباء
And he was among the chiefs.
وهو كالعريف على القوم، المقدم عليهم، الذي يتعرف أخبارهم، وينقب عن أحوالهم أي يفتش
He is like the chief over the people, their leader, who learns their news and investigates their conditions, meaning he searches.
وكان النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، قد جعل، ليلة العقبة، كل واحد من الجماعة الذين بايعوه بها نقيبا على قومه وجماعته، ليأخذوا عليهم الإسلام ويعرفوهم شرائطه، وكانوا اثني عشر نقيبا كلهم من الأنصار، وكان عبادة بن الصامت منهم
And the Prophet, peace be upon him, had appointed, on the night of Al-Aqabah, each one of the group who pledged allegiance to him as a chief over his people and his group, so they would take their pledge of Islam and inform them of its conditions. They were twelve chiefs, all from the Ansar, and Ubadah ibn Al-Samit was among them.
وقيل: النقيب الرئيس الأكبر
And it was said: The naqīb is the great leader.
وقولهم: في فلان مناقب جميلة أي أخلاق
And their saying: So-and-so has beautiful virtues means good character.
وهو حسن النقيبة أي جميل الخليقة
And he is of good disposition, meaning beautiful in creation.
وإنما قيل للنقيب نقيب، لأنه يعلم دخيلة أمر القوم، ويعرف مناقبهم، وهو الطريق إلى معرفة أمورهم
And the naqīb is called naqīb because he knows the inner reality of the people's affairs and their merits, and he is the way to know their matters.
ومن ذلك يقال: نقبت الحائط أي بلغت في النقب آخره
And from this it is said: I penetrated the wall, meaning I reached its end in the penetration.
ويقال: كلب نقيب، وهو أن ينقب حنجرة الكلب، أو غلصمته، ليضعف صوته، ولا يرتفع صوت نباحه، وإنما يفعل ذلك البخلاء من العرب، لئلا يطرقهم ضيف، باستماع نباح الكلاب
And it is said: a naqīb dog, which is to cut the dog's throat or gullet to weaken its voice, so that the sound of its barking does not rise. The stingy Arabs do this so that a guest does not arrive upon them by hearing the dogs bark.
والنقاب: البطن
And al-niqāb is the belly.
يقال في المثل، في الاثنين يتشابهان: فرخان في نقاب
It is said in the proverb, about two things that resemble each other: Two chicks in a belly.
والنقيب: المزمار
And al-naqīb is the musical instrument (flute/pipe).
وناقبت فلانا إذا لقيته فجأة
And I encountered so-and-so unexpectedly if I met him suddenly.
ولقيته نقابا أي مواجهة
And I met him face to face.
ومررت على طريق فناقبني فيه فلان نقابا أي لقيني على غير ميعاد، ولا اعتماد
And I passed by a road, and so-and-so met me on it unexpectedly, meaning he met me without appointment or reliance.
ورد الماء نقابا، مثل التقاطا إذا ورد عليه من غير أن يشعر به قبل ذلك
And the water was reached unexpectedly, like being picked up, if one arrived at it without being aware of it beforehand.
وقيل: ورد عليه من غير طلب
And it was said: he arrived at it without seeking it.
ونقب: موضع
And Naqb: a place.
وهن عجال من نباك، ومن نقب
And they are hurried from your place, and from Naqb.
