نضب الشيء: سال.
The thing dried up: it flowed away.
ونضب الماء ينضب، بالضم، نضوبا، ونضب إذا ذهب في الأرض؛ وفي المحكم: غار وبعد؛
And water dries up (yanḍubu), with damma, naḍūban, and it dries up if it goes into the earth; and in Al-Muḥkam: it sinks and becomes distant.
أعددت للحوض، إذا ما نضبا، ... بكرة شيزى، ومطاطا سلهبا
I prepared for the cistern, when it dries up, ... a morning of shīzā, and a long, strong rope.
ونضوب القوم أيضا: بعدهم.
And the remoteness of people also means their distance.
والناضب: البعيد.
And the distant one is the nāḍib.
ما نضب عنه البحر، وهو حي، فمات، فكلوه ؛
What the sea receded from while it was alive, and it died, so they ate it;
وقد يستعار للمعاني.
And it may be used metaphorically for abstract meanings.
نضب عمره، وضحى ظله أي نفد عمره، وانقضى.
His life dried up, and his shadow became clear, meaning his life was exhausted and ended.
ونضبت عينه تنضب نضوبا: غارت؛
And his eye became hollow (tanḍubu) naḍūban: it sank;
بعد ما ... يرى، في فروع المقلتين، نضوب
After what... is seen, in the depths of the eyes, hollowness.
ونضبت المفازة نضوبا: بعدت؛
And the desert became distant (naḍabat) naḍūban: it became far;
إذا تغالين بسهم ناضب
If you aim high with a distant arrow.
جريء على قرع الأساود وطؤه، ... سميع برز الكلب، والكلب ناضب
Bold in treading upon the black snakes, ... attentive when the dog emerges, and the dog is distant.
إن فلانا لناضب الخير أي قليل الخير، وقد نضب خيره نضوبا؛
Indeed, so-and-so is lacking in goodness, meaning little goodness, and his goodness has dried up (naḍaba) naḍūban;
ونضب الخصب: قل أو انقطع.
And fertility dried up: it became scarce or ceased.
ونضبت الدبرة نضوبا: اشتدت.
And the sore became severe (naḍabat) naḍūban: it intensified.
أنضب القوس، لغة في أنبضها: جبذ وترها لتصوت؛
He made the bow anḍaba, a dialectal variant of anbaḍahā: he drew its string to make it sound;
أنضب في قوسه إنضابا، أصاتها؛ مقلوب.
He made his bow anḍaba, making it sound; it is an inversion.
أنضبت وتر القوس، مثل أنبضته، مقلوب منه.
You drew the bowstring anḍabtu, like anbaḍtuhu, it is an inversion of it.
أبو عمرو: أنبضت القوس وانتضبتها إذا جذبت وترها لتصوت؛
Abu Amr: You made the bow anbaḍat and intaḍabtahā if you drew its string to make it sound;
ترن إرنانا إذا ما أنضبا
It hums a humming sound when it is made to sound.
وهو إذا مد الوتر، ثم أرسله.
And it is when the string is drawn, then released.
ونبض العرق ينبض نباضا، وهو تحركه.
And the vein pulsates (yanbiḍu) nabāḍan, which is its movement.
نضبت الناقة؛ وتنضيبها: قلة لبنها وطول فواقها، وإبطاء درتها.
The she-camel's milk dried up (naḍabat); and her tanḍīb: her scarcity of milk, her long interval between milkings, and her slow yielding of milk.
والتنضب: شجر ينبت بالحجاز، وليس بنجد منه شيء إلا جزعة واحدة بطرف ذقان، عند التقيدة، وهو ينبت ضخما على هيئة السرح، وعيدانه بيض ضخمة، وهو محتظر، وورقه متقبض، ولا تراه إلا كأنه يابس مغبر وإن كان نابتا، وله شوك مثل شوك العوسج، وله جنى مثل العنب الصغار، يؤكل وهو أحيمر.
And the Tanḍab: a tree that grows in the Hijaz, and there is nothing of it in Najd except a single young tree at the edge of Dhagān, near Al-Taqaydah. It grows large like the Sarḥ tree, its branches are thick and white, it is a shelter, its leaves are contracted, and you see it only as if it were dry and dusty even if it is growing. It has thorns like the thorns of the 'awsaj, and it has fruit like small grapes, which is eaten and is reddish.
دخان التنضب أبيض في مثل لون الغبار، ولذلك شبهت الشعراء الغبار به؛
The smoke of the Tanḍab is white, like the color of dust, and for this reason, poets have likened dust to it;
وهل أشهدن خيلا، كأن غبارها، ... بأسفل علكد، دواخن تنضب؟
And shall I witness cavalry, whose dust, ... at the bottom of 'Alkad, is like the smoke of Tanḍab?
التنضب شجر ضخام، ليس له ورق، وهو يسوق ويخرج له خشب ضخام وأفنان كثيرة، وإنما ورقه قضبان، تأكله الإبل والغنم.
The Tanḍab is a large tree, it has no leaves, and it grows and produces large wood and many branches. Its leaves are only twigs, which camels and sheep eat.
التنضب شجر له شوك قصار، وليس من شجر الشواهق، تألفه الحرابي؛
The Tanḍab is a tree with short thorns, and it is not among the tall trees; the lizards frequent it;
كأن الدخان، الذي غادرت ... ضحيا، دواخن من تنضب
As if the smoke, which you left ... in the morning, is smoke from Tanḍab.
وعندي أنه إنما سمي بذلك لقلة مائه.
And in my opinion, it was named so because of its scarcity of water.
رأيتك لا تغنين عني نقرة، ... إذا اختلفت في الهراوى الدمامك فأشهد لا آتيك، ما دام تنضب ... بأرضك، أو ضخم العصا من رجالك
I saw that you would not save me from a blow, ... if the blood of your neck is struck by the clubs. So I bear witness that I will not come to you, as long as Tanḍab ... is in your land, or a stout-sticked man among your men.
وكان التنضب قد اعتيد أن تقطع منه العصي الجياد، واحدته تنضبة؛
And the Tanḍab was accustomed to be cut for making good sticks, the singular of which is tanḍabah;
أنى أتيح له حرباء تنضبة، ... لا يرسل الساق، إلا ممسكا ساقا
How was he provided with a Tanḍab chameleon, ... it does not release a leg, except by holding another leg.
ومن الأشجار التنضب، واحدتها تنضبة.
And among the trees is the Tanḍab, its singular is tanḍabah.
هي شجرة ضخمة، تقطع منها العمد للأخبية، والتاء زائدة، لأنه ليس في الكلام فعلل؛
It is a large tree, from which poles are cut for tents, and the 't' is extra, because there is no fa'lal pattern in the language;
إذا حن بين القوم نبع وتنضب
When between the people, a naba' and a tanḍab tree are desired.
النبع شجر القسي، وتنضب شجر تتخذ منه السهام.
The naba' is the tree for bows, and the tanḍab is a tree from which arrows are made.
