النحب والنحيب: رفع الصوت بالبكاء، وفي المحكم: أشد البكاء.
Al-nahb and al-naheeb: raising the voice in crying, and in Al-Muhkam: the most intense crying.
نحب ينحب بالكسر «2»، نحيبا، والانتحاب مثله، وانتحب انتحابا.
He cries (nahaba) with a kasra, nahiban, and al-intihab is similar, and he wailed (intahaba) intihaban.
وفي حديث ابن عمر لما نعي إليه حجر: غلب عليه النحيب ؛ النحيب: البكاء بصوت طويل ومد.
And in the hadith of Ibn Umar when Hajar was announced dead to him: weeping overcame him; al-naheeb: crying with a long and drawn-out voice.
وفي حديث الأسود بن المطلب: هل أحل النحب؟ أي أحل البكاء.
And in the hadith of Al-Aswad bin Al-Mutallib: Has weeping been permitted? Meaning, has crying been permitted.
وفي حديث علي: فهل دفعت الأقارب، ونفعت النواحب؟ أي البواكي، جمع ناحبة؛
And in the hadith of Ali: Did the relatives repel (it), and did the wailing women benefit? Meaning the crying women, the plural of nahiba;
والنحب: النذر، تقول منه: نحبت أنحب، بالضم؛
And al-nahb: the vow, you say from it: I vowed (nahabtu), I vow (anhubu), with damma;
فإني، والهجاء لآل لأم، ... كذات النحب توفي بالنذور
For I, and the satire against the family of La'am, ... are like one who fulfills vows.
وقد نحب ينحب؛ قال: يا عمرو يا ابن الأكرمين نسبا، ... قد نحب المجد عليك نحبا
And he vows (nahaba) and vows (yanhabu); he said: O Amr, O son of the noblest in lineage, ... glory has vowed itself to you, nahban.
والنحب: الخطر العظيم.
And al-nahb: the great risk.
ناحبه على الأمر: خاطره؛ قال جرير: بطخفة جالدنا الملوك، وخيلنا، ... عشية بسطام، جرين على نحب أي على خطر عظيم.
He risked (nahaba) it concerning the matter: he gambled; Jarir said: At Tukhfah we fought kings, and our cavalry, ... on the evening of Bistam, they ran into danger (nahb), meaning great risk.
ويقال: على نذر.
And it is said: upon a vow.
والنحب: المراهنة والفعل كالفعل «3».
And al-nahb: the wager and the action is like the action.
والنحب: الهمة.
And al-nahb: determination.
والنحب: البرهان.
And al-nahb: the proof.
والنحب: الحاجة.
And al-nahb: the need.
والنحب: السعال.
And al-nahb: the cough.
من أمراض الإبل النحاب، والقحاب، والنحاز، وكل هذا من السعال.
Among the diseases of camels are al-nuhab, al-quhab, and al-nahaz, and all of this is from coughing.
وقد نحب البعير ينحب نحابا إذا أخذه السعال.
And the camel coughed (nahaba) and coughs (yanhabu) nahaban if the cough afflicted it.
أبو عمرو: النحب النوم؛ والنحب: صوت البكاء؛ والنحب: الطول؛ والنحب: السمن؛ والنحب: الشدة؛ والنحب: القمار، كلها بتسكين الحاء.
Abu Amr: Al-nahb is sleep; and al-nahb: the sound of crying; and al-nahb: length; and al-nahb: fatness; and al-nahb: severity; and al-nahb: gambling, all with a sukun on the ha.
وروي عن الرياشي: يوم نحب أي طويل.
And it is narrated from Al-Riyashi: a day of nahb, meaning long.
والنحب: الموت.
And al-nahb: death.
فمنهم من قضى نحبه ؛ وقيل معناه: قتلوا في سبيل الله، فأدركوا ما تمنوا، فذلك قضاء النحب.
So of them is he who fulfilled his nahb; and it was said its meaning is: they were killed in the path of Allah, and they attained what they wished for, so that is the fulfillment of nahb.
وقال الزجاج والفراء: فمنهم من قضى نحبه أي أجله.
And Al-Zajjaj and Al-Farra said: So of them is he who fulfilled his nahb, meaning his appointed term.
والنحب: المدة والوقت. يقال قضى فلان نحبه إذا مات.
And al-nahb: the duration and the time. It is said so-and-so fulfilled his nahb if he died.
وروى الأزهري عن محمد بن إسحاق في قوله: فمنهم من قضى نحبه ، قال: فرغ من عمله، ورجع إلى ربه؛ هذا لمن استشهد يوم أحد، ومنهم من ينتظر ما وعده الله تعالى من نصره، أو الشهادة، على ما مضى عليه أصحابه ؛ وقيل: فمنهم من قضى نحبه أي قضى نذره، كأنه ألزم نفسه أن يموت، فوفى به.
And Al-Azhari narrated from Muhammad bin Ishaq regarding his saying: So of them is he who fulfilled his nahb, he said: He finished his deeds and returned to his Lord; this is for him who was martyred on the day of Uhud, and of them is he who awaits what Allah the Almighty promised him of His victory, or martyrdom, according to what his companions went through; and it was said: So of them is he who fulfilled his nahb, meaning he fulfilled his vow, as if he obligated himself to die, so he fulfilled it.
ويقال: تناحب القوم إذا تواعدوا للقتال أي وقت، وفي غير القتال أيضا.
And it is said: The people agreed upon a time (tanaahabu) if they set a time for fighting, and also for non-fighting.
وفي الحديث: طلحة ممن قضى نحبه ؛ النحب: النذر، كأنه ألزم نفسه أن يصدق الأعداء في الحرب، فوفى به ولم يفسخ؛ وقيل: هو من النحب الموت، كأنه يلزم نفسه أن يقاتل حتى يموت.
And in the hadith: Talhah is among those who fulfilled his nahb; al-nahb: the vow, as if he obligated himself to be truthful to the enemies in war, so he fulfilled it and did not break it; and it was said: it is from al-nahb, death, as if he obligated himself to fight until he died.
وقال الزجاج: النحب النفس، عن أبي عبيدة.
And Al-Zajjaj said: Al-nahb is the soul, from Abu Ubaidah.
والنحب: السير السريع، مثل النعب.
And al-nahb: fast travel, like al-na'b.
وسير منحب: سريع، وكذلك الرجل.
And a fast journey (manhab): fast, and so is the man.
ونحب القوم تنحيبا: جدوا في عملهم؛ قال طفيل: يزرن ألالا، ما ينحبن غيره، ... بكل ملب أشعث الرأس محرم
And the people strove (nahaba) tanheeban: they were diligent in their work; Tufayl said: They visit Al-Alal, they do not strive for anything else, ... with every disheveled and consecrated pilgrim.
وسار فلان على نحب إذا سار فأجهد السير، كأنه خاطر على شيء، فجد؛ قال الشاعر: ورد القطا منها بخمس نحب أي دأبت.
And so-and-so traveled with nahb if he traveled and exerted himself in the journey, as if he risked something, so he strove; the poet said: The sandgrouse drank from it for five nahb, meaning they were diligent.
والتنحيب: شدة القرب للماء؛ قال ذو الرمة: ورب مفازة قذف جموح، ... تغول منحب القرب اغتيالا
And al-tanheeb: intense proximity to water; Dhu Al-Rummah said: And many a vast, wild desert, ... that destroys the one who is close to water (manhab al-qurb) stealthily.
وسرنا إليها ثلاث ليال منحبات أي دائبات.
And we traveled to it for three nights, diligent (munhibat), meaning continuous.
ونحبنا سيرنا: دأبناه؛ ويقال: سار سيرا منحبا أي قاصدا لا يريد غيره، كأنه جعل ذلك نذرا على نفسه لا يريد غيره؛ قال الكميت: يخدن بنا عرض الفلاة وطولها، ... كما صار عن يمنى يديه المنحب
And we made our journey diligent (nahabna) sayranah: we made it continuous; and it is said: he traveled a diligent journey (manhaban) meaning purposeful, wanting nothing else, as if he made that a vow upon himself, wanting nothing else; Al-Kumait said: They carry us across the width and length of the desert, ... as the determined one (al-manhab) went from his right hand.
يقول: إن لم أبلغ مكان كذا وكذا، فلك يميني.
He says: If I do not reach such-and-such a place, then my right hand is yours.
أنحب فيقضى أم ضلال وباطل يقول: عليه نذر في طول سعيه.
Does he strive (anhaba) and fulfill (it) or is it misguidance and falsehood? He says: He has a vow in the length of his endeavor.
ونحبه السير: أجهده.
And the journey exhausted him (nahabahu) al-sayr: it made him exert himself.
وناحب الرجل: حاكمه وفاخره.
And he contended with the man (nahaba): he judged him and boasted against him.
وناحبت الرجل إلى فلان، مثل حاكمته.
And I contended with the man to so-and-so (nahabtu), like I judged him.
وفي حديث طلحة بن عبيد الله أنه قال لابن عباس: هل لك أن أناحبك وترفع النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم؟ قال أبو عبيد، قال الأصمعي: ناحبت الرجل إذا حاكمته أو قاضيته إلى رجل.
And in the hadith of Talhah bin Ubaidullah that he said to Ibn Abbas: Will you allow me to contend with you and you elevate the Prophet, peace be upon him? Abu Ubaid said, Al-Asma'i said: I contended with the man (nahabtu) if I judged him or brought him to arbitration before a man.
قال، وقال غيره: ناحبته، ونافرته مثله.
He said, and others said: I contended with him (nahabtuhu), and I challenged him similarly.
قال أبو منصور: أراد طلحة هذا المعنى، كأنه قال لابن عباس: أنافرك أي أفاخرك وأحاكمك، فتعد فضائلك وحسبك، وأعد فضائلي؛ ولا تذكر في فضائلك النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقرب قرابتك منه، فإن هذا الفضل مسلم لك، فارفعه من الرأس، وأنافرك بما سواه؛ يعني أنه لا يقصر عنه، فيما عدا ذلك من المفاخر.
Abu Mansur said: Talhah intended this meaning, as if he said to Ibn Abbas: I challenge you, meaning I boast against you and judge you, so count your virtues and your lineage, and I will count my virtues; and do not mention in your virtues the Prophet, peace be upon him, and your closeness to him, for this virtue is acknowledged for you, so elevate it from the start, and I will challenge you with what is other than that; meaning he will not fall short of him, in all other matters of pride.
والنحبة: القرعة، وهو من ذلك لأنها كالحاكمة في الاستهام.
And al-nahbah: the lot, and it is from this because it is like a judge in drawing lots.
ومننه الحديث: لو علم الناس ما في الصف الأول، لاقتتلوا عليه، وما تقدموا إلا بنحبة أي بقرعة.
And from it the hadith: If people knew what was in the first row, they would fight for it, and they would not advance except by lot (nahbah), meaning by drawing lots.
والمناحبة: المخاطرة والمراهنة.
And al-munahabah: the risk and the wager.
وفي حديث أبي بكر، رضي الله عنه، في مناحبة: الم غلبت الروم ؛ أي مراهنته لقريش، بين الروم والفرس.
And in the hadith of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding munahabah: When the Romans defeated the Persians; meaning his wager with Quraysh, between the Romans and the Persians.
ومننه حديث الأذان «1»: استهموا عليه.
And from it the hadith of the Adhan: They drew lots for it.
قال: وأصله من المناحبة، وهي المحاكمة.
He said: And its origin is from al-munahabah, which is the judgment.
قال: ويقال للقمار: النحب، لأنه كالمساهمة.
He said: And gambling is called al-nahb, because it is like drawing lots.
أبو سعيد: التنحيب الإكباب على الشيء لا يفارقه، ويقال: نحب فلان على أمره.
Abu Saeed: Al-tanheeb is to be engrossed in something and not leave it, and it is said: So-and-so was engrossed (nahaba) in his matter.
قال: وقال أعرابي أصابته شوكة، فنحب عليها يستخرجها أي أكب عليها؛ وكذلك هو في كل شيء، وهو منحب في كذا، والله أعلم.
He said: And an Arab said he was pricked by a thorn, so he was engrossed (nahaba) in extracting it, meaning he was focused on it; and so it is in everything, and he is engrossed (munhib) in such-and-such, and Allah knows best.
