وهو كثبك أي قربك
And it is 'kathbuk' meaning near you.
لا يستعمل إلا ظرفا
It is not used except as an adverb.
وهو يرمي من كثب، ومن كثم أي من قرب وتمكن
And he shoots from close range, meaning from proximity and with ability.
وأكثبك الصيد والرمي، وأكثب لك: دنا منك وأمكنك، فارمه
And the hunt and shooting became close to you, and it drew near to you and became possible for you, so shoot it.
وأكثبوا لكم: دنوا منكم
And they drew near to you: they approached you.
أكثب فلان إلى القوم أي دنا منهم
So-and-so drew near to the people, meaning he approached them.
وكاثبت القوم أي دنوت منهم
And I approached the people, meaning I drew near to them.
إن أكثبكم القوم فانبلوهم
If the people draw near to you, then test them.
إذا كثبوكم فارموهم بالنبل من كثب
If they draw near to you, then shoot them with arrows from close range.
وظن رجال أن قد أكثبت أطماعهم أي قربت
And men thought that their desires had drawn near, meaning they had become close.
ويقال: كثب القوم إذا اجتمعوا، فهم كاثبون
And it is said: the people gathered if they assembled, so they are gatherers.
وكثب الشيء يكثبه ويكثبه كثبا: جمعه من قرب وصبه
And he gathered the thing, collecting it from nearby and pouring it.
مكان النبي من الكائب
The place of the mound of the collector.
فبعث النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، بتمر عجوة فكثب بيننا، وقيل: كلوه ولا توزعوه أي ترك بين أيدينا مجموعا
So the Prophet, peace be upon him, sent some 'ajwa dates, and they were gathered between us, and it was said: Eat them and do not distribute them, meaning they were left collected in front of us.
وبين يديه قرنفل مكثوب أي مجموع
And before him were cloves, gathered, meaning collected.
وانكثب الرمل: اجتمع
And the sand gathered: it accumulated.
والكثيب من الرمل: القطعة تنقاد محدودبة
And the dune of sand: the piece that is formed, humped.
وكانت الجبال كثيبا مهيلا
And the mountains were like flowing dunes.
كثبت التراب فانكثب إذا نثرت بعضه فوق بعض
You heaped the earth and it became heaped if you scattered some of it over others.
كثبت الطعام أكثبه كثبا، ونثرته نثرا، وهما واحد
You heaped the food, collecting it, and scattered it, and they are one.
وكل ما انصب في شيء واجتمع، فقد انكثب فيه
And whatever is poured into something and gathers, it has accumulated in it.
والكثبة من الماء واللبن. القليل منه؛ وقيل: هي مثل الجرعة تبقى في الإناء
And the kathbah of water and milk. A small amount of it; and it is said: it is like a sip remaining in the container.
أولد رخالا، وأجز جفالا، وأحلب كثبا ثقالا
I give birth to young, and I provide abundant milk, and I milk heavy small portions.
برح بالعينين خطاب الكثب، ... يقول: إني خاطب وقد كذب، وإنما يخطب عسا من حلب
He is bothersome to the eyes with the speech of the Kathb, ... He says: I am a suitor, and he has lied, and he is only seeking a large quantity of milk.
يقال للرجل إذا جاء يطلب القرى: إنه ليخطب كثبة؛ وأنشد الأزهري لذي الرمة: ميلاء، من معدن الصيران، قاصية، ... أبعارهن على أهدافها كثب
It is said of a man when he comes seeking hospitality: He is seeking a small portion; And Al-Azharī recited for Dhu al-Rummah: A tall one, from the mine of Al-Sayran, distant, ... their droppings are gathered on their targets.
وأكثب الرجل: سقاه كثبة من لبن
And the man was given a small portion of milk to drink.
وكل طائفة من طعام أو تمر أو تراب أو نحو ذلك، فهو كثبة، بعد أن يكون قليلا
And every portion of food, or dates, or earth, or the like, it is a kathbah, after it is small.
ومن سمي الكثيب من الرمل، لأنه انصب في مكان فاجتمع فيه
And the dune of sand is named from this, because it poured into a place and gathered there.
ثلاثة على كثب المسك ، وفي رواية على كثبان المسك ، هما جمع كثيب
Three on a heap of musk, and in another narration on heaps of musk, both are plurals of kathib.
والكثيب: المستطيل المحدودب
And the dune: the elongated, humped one.
أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أمر برجمه حين اعترف بالزنى، ثم قال: يعمد أحدكم إلى المرأة المغيبة، فيخدعها بالكثبة، لا أوتى بأحد منهم فعل ذلك، إلا جعلته نكالا
That the Prophet, peace be upon him, ordered him to be stoned when he confessed to adultery, then he said: Does one of you approach a hidden woman and deceive her with a small portion? I will not be brought anyone who does that except I make him an example.
سألت سماكا عن الكثبة، فقال: القليل من اللبن؛ أبو عبيد: وهو كذلك في غير اللبن
I asked Simak about the kathbah, and he said: A little milk; Abu Ubaid said: And it is so with things other than milk.
احتلبوا كثبا أي من كل شاة شيئا قليلا
They milked a kathbah, meaning a little from each sheep.
وقد كثب لبنها إذا قل إما عند غزارة، وإما عند قلة كلإ
And its milk became scarce when it was little, either during abundance or during scarcity of pasture.
والكثبة: كل قليل جمعته من طعام، أو لبن، أو غير ذلك
And the kathbah: every small amount you gathered of food, or milk, or otherwise.
ونعم كثاب: كثير
And abundant livestock: many.
والكثاب: السهم «2» عامة، وما رماه بكثاب أي بسهم؛ وقيل: هو الصغير من السهام هاهنا
And the kathab: the arrow in general, and he shot him with a kathab, meaning an arrow; and it is said: it is the small one of the arrows here.
كأن قرصا من طحين معتلث، ... هامته في مثل كثاب العبث
Like a round cake of flour mixed, ... its head is like the game of kathab.
وجاء يكثبه أي يتلوه

والكاثبة من الفرس: المنسج؛ وقيل: هو ما ارتفع من المنسج؛ وقيل: هو مقدم المنسج، حيث تقع عليه يد الفارس، والجمع الكواثب
And the kathibah of a horse: the withers; and it is said: it is what is raised from the withers; and it is said: it is the front of the withers, where the rider's hand falls, and the plural is al-kawathib.
لهن عليهم عادة قد عرفنها، ... إذا عرض الخطي فوق الكواثب
They have a custom they know regarding them, ... when the patterned sword appears above the withers.
يضعون رماحهم على كواثب خيلهم ، وهي من الفرس، مجتمع كتفيه قدام السرج
They place their spears on the withers of their horses, and it is from the horse, the meeting of its shoulders in front of the saddle.
لأصبح رتما دقاق الحصى، ... مكان النبي من الكاثب
He would become crushed fine gravel, ... the place of the mound of the Kathib.
