Ka'aba, yak'abu, ka'aban, ka'abatan, wa ka'abatan, like nash'atan wa nasha'atan, and ra'fatan wa ra'afatan, and ikta'aba ikti'aban: he was sad, grieved, and broken, so he is ka'ib and ka'ib.

وفي الحديث: أعوذ بك من كآبة المنقلب.

And in the Hadith: 'I seek refuge in You from the sadness of returning.'

الكآبة: تغير النفس بالانكسار، من شدة الهم والحزن، وهو كئيب ومكتئب.

المعنى: أنه يرجع من سفره بأمر يحزنه، إما أصابه من سفره وإما قدم عليه مثل أن يعود غير مقضي الحاجة، أو أصابت ماله آفة، أو يقدم على أهله فيجدهم مرضى، أو فقد بعضهم.

The meaning: that he returns from his journey with something that saddens him, either something that befell him from his journey or something that happened upon his arrival, such as returning with his needs unmet, or his wealth suffering a calamity, or arriving to his family to find them ill, or having lost some of them.

وامرأة كئيبة وكأباء أيضا؛

And a woman is ka'ibah and ka'abaa' also;

قال جندل بن المثنى: عز على عمك أن تأوقي، ... أو أن تبيتي ليلة لم تغبقي، أو أن تري كأباء لم تبرنشقي

Jandal bin Al-Muthanna said: 'It was hard for your uncle that you would stay up, ... or that you would spend a night without resting in the evening, or that you would see ka'abaa' without rejoicing.'

ويقال: ما أكأبك

And it is said: 'How sad you are!'

والكأباء: الحزن الشديد، على فعلاء.

And Al-Ka'abaa': intense sadness, on the pattern of Fa'alaa.

وأكأب: دخل في الكآبة.

And Ak'aba: he entered into sadness.

وأكأب: وقع في هلكة؛

And Ak'aba: he fell into ruin;

وقوله أنشده ثعلب: يسير الدليل بها خيفة، ... وما بكآبته من خفاء

And his saying, which Tha'lab recited: 'The guide travels with it in fear, ... and there is no hiddenness in his sadness.'

فسره فقال: قد ضل الدليل بها؛

He explained it, saying: 'The guide has lost his way with it.'

قال ابن سيده: وعندي أن الكآبة، هاهنا، الحزن، لأن الخائف محزون.

Ibn Sidah said: 'And in my opinion, sadness, here, means grief, because the fearful person is grieved.'

ورماد مكتئب اللون: إذا ضرب إلى السواد، كما يكون وجه الكئيب.

And ash that is mukta'ib al-lawn: if it tends towards blackness, like the face of a sad person.
