As for 'al-qurṭubān' which the common people say for one who lacks jealousy, it is altered from its original form.

وقرطب فلان الجزور إذا قطع عظامها ولحمها.

And so-and-so 'qarṭaba' the camel if he cut its bones and its meat.

والقراطب: القطاع.

And 'al-qarāṭib': the cutters.

ما عليه قرطعبة أي قطعة خرقة.

He has no 'qurṭaʿbah' on him, meaning a piece of rag.

وما له قرطعبة أي ما له شيء؛ وأنشد:

And he has no 'qurṭaʿbah', meaning he has nothing; and he recited:

فما عليه من لباس طحربه، ... وما له من نشب قرطعبه

So he has no 'ṭaḥraba' (rag) of clothing on him, ... and he has no 'qarṭaʿaba' (wealth) of property.

يقال ما عنده قرطعبة، ولا قذعملة، ولا سعنة، ولا معنة أي شيء؛ قال أبو عبيد: ما وجدنا أحدا يدري أصولها.

It is said: he has no 'qurṭaʿbah', nor 'qadhma'lah', nor 'saʿnah', nor 'maʿnah', meaning anything; Abū ʿUbayd said: we did not find anyone who knew their origins.
