That Qutaybah ibn Muslim, when he struck the people of Khwarazm and surrounded them, their messenger came to him and asked his name. He said: Qutaybah. The messenger said to him: You will not conquer it; only a man named Ikāf will conquer it. Qutaybah said: Then no one but me will conquer it, and my name is Ikāf.

فقال: وهذا يوافق ما قال الليث

He said: And this agrees with what Al-Layth said.

وإنما يكون للسانية؛ ومنه قول لبيد: وألقي قتبها المخزوم

And it is only for the riding camel; and from it is the saying of Labīd: And the Makhzūmī cast its saddle.

وقيل: هو الإكاف الصغير الذي على قدر سنام البعير

And it was said: It is the small saddle that is the size of the camel's hump.

وفي الصحاح: رحل صغير على قدر السنام

And in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ: A small saddle the size of the hump.

وأقتب البعير إقتابا إذا شد عليه القتب

And the camel was saddled (aqtaba) with a qitab (iqtaban) when the qitab was fastened upon it.

وإن كانت على ظهر قتب؛ القتب للجمل كالإكاف لغيره

Even if she is on the back of a saddle; the qitab is for the camel like the ikāf is for others.

وقيل: إن نساء العرب كن إذا أردن الولادة، جلسن على قتب، ويقلن: إنه أسلس لخروج الولد، فأرادت تلك الحالة

And it was said: The women of the Arabs, when they wanted to give birth, would sit on a qitab, and say: It is easier for the exit of the child, so she intended that state.

والقتب، بالكسر: جميع أداة السانية من أعلاقها وحبالها؛ والجمع من كل ذلك: أقتاب؛ قال سيبويه: لم يجاوزوا به هذا البناء

And al-qutub, with kasra: all the equipment of the riding camel from its trappings and ropes; and the plural of all of that is: aqtāb; Sibawayh said: They did not go beyond this pattern for it.

والقتوبة من الإبل: الذي يقتب بالقتب إقتابا؛ قال اللحياني: هو ما أمكن أن يوضع عليه القتب، وإنما جاء بالهاء، لأنها للشيء مما يقتب

And al-qutūbah from the camels: that which is saddled with the qitab (yuqtabu bil-qitabi iqtiban); Al-Lihyānī said: It is that upon which the qitab can be placed, and it came with the 'ha' because it refers to the thing that is saddled.

وفي الحديث: لا صدقة في الإبل القتوبة ؛ القتوبة، بالفتح: الإبل التي توضع الأقتاب على ظهورها، فعولة بمعنى مفعولة، كالركوبة والحلوبة

And in the hadith: There is no charity in the qutūbah camels; Al-qutūbah, with fatha: the camels upon whose backs the aqtāb are placed, fa'ūlah in the meaning of maf'ūlah, like al-rakūbah and al-ḥalūbah.

أراد: ليس في الإبل العوامل صدقة

He meant: There is no charity in the working camels.

وإن شئت حذفت الهاء، فقلت القتوب

And if you wish, you may omit the 'ha', and say al-qutūb.

And it is said: Be gentle with him, and do not impose heavily upon him in the oath; the rajaz poet said: To you I complain of the burden of a debt that has imposed... my back with burdens that leave one exhausted.

القتب والقتب: المعى، أنثى، والجمع أقتاب؛ وهي القتبة، بالهاء، وتصغيرها قتيبة
