والمغرب في الأصل: موضع الغروب ثم استعمل في المصدر والزمان، وقياسه الفتح، ولكن استعمل بالكسر كالمشرق والمسجد.

هل أطرفتنا من مغربة خبر؟ أي هل من خبر جاء من بعد؟

Have you brought us news from afar (maghribah)? Meaning, is there any news that came from a distance?

والخبر المغرب: الذي جاء غريبا حادثا طريفا.

And the western news (al-khabar al-maghrib) is that which came as strange, new, and novel.

والتغريب: النفي عن البلد.

And al-taghreeb is: banishment from the country.

And it is said: go away from me (ughrub 'anni), meaning distance yourself.

He ordered the exile (taghreeb) of the adulterer; al-taghreeb is banishment from the country where the offense occurred.

And in another hadith: Islam began as something strange (ghareeban), and it will return as something strange as it began, so blessedness be for the strangers (al-ghurabaa').

ورحى اليد يقال لها: غريبة، لأن الجيران يتعاورونها بينهم

And a hand mill is called a ghareebah, because neighbors borrow it among themselves.

واغترب الرجل: نكح في الغرائب، وتزوج إلى غير أقاربه.

And a man married outside his family (ightarraba): he married among strangers (al-gharaa'ib), and married outside his relatives.

ولا غريبة نجيبة أي إنها مع كونها غريبة، فإنها غير نجيبة الأولاد.

And not an unrelated but fertile woman (ghareebah najeebah), meaning that despite her being unrelated (ghareebah), she is not fertile in producing children.

والعنقاء المغرب؛ قال: هكذا جاء عن العرب بغير هاء، وهي التي أغربت في البلاد، فنأت ولم تحس ولم تر.

And the mythical bird al-'anqaa' al-mughrib; it was said: it came from the Arabs without a ha, and it is that which went far (aghrabat) in the lands, becoming remote and not felt or seen.
