And it is said of a bird: 'abba', and 'shariba' (drank) is not said.
مصوا الماء مصا، ولا تعبوه عبا ؛
Drink the water by sipping, and do not gulp it down.
العب: الشرب بلا تنفس، ومنه الحديث: الكباد من العب.
Al-'abb: drinking without breathing, and from it is the hadith: liver disease is from 'al-'abb'.
الكباد: داء يعرض للكبد.
Al-kibad: a disease that affects the liver.
وفي حديث الحوض: يعب فيه ميزابان أي يصبان فلا ينقطع انصبابهما؛
And in the hadith of the cistern: two streams pour into it, meaning they pour and their pouring does not stop.
الحمام يشرب الماء عبا، كما تعب الدواب.
Pigeons drink water by gulping, just as animals do.
وإن لم تجده لم تأتب له، يعني لم تتهيأ لطلبه ولا تشربه؛
And if they did not find it, they would not approach it, meaning they would not prepare to seek it nor drink it.
عباب كل شيء: أوله.

وفي الحديث: إنا حي من مذحج، عباب سلفها ولباب شرفها.
And in the hadith: We are a tribe from Madhhij, the abundance of its ancestors and the core of its honor.
طرت بعبابها وفزت بحبابها أي سبقت إلى جمة الإسلام، وأدركت أوائله، وشربت صفوه، وحويت فضائله.
I flew with its abundance and attained its fullness, meaning I preceded to the vastness of Islam, reached its beginnings, drank its pure essence, and encompassed its virtues.

والعبب: عنب الثعلب، قال: وشجرة يقال لها الراء، ممدود؛ قال ابن حبيب: هو العبب؛ ومن قال عنب الثعلب، فقد أخطأ.
And 'al-'abab: black nightshade, he said: and a tree called 'ar-ra', extended; Ibn Habib said: it is 'al-'abab'; and whoever says black nightshade, has erred.
إذا تربعت، ما بين الشريق إلى ... أرض الفلاج، أولات السرح والعبب
When you spend the spring, between Ash-Shariq and ... the land of Al-Falaj, the owners of the acacia and 'al-'abab.
والعبب: ضرب من النبات؛ زعم أبو حنيفة أنه من الأغلاث.
And 'al-'abab: a type of plant; Abu Hanifa claimed it is from the 'aghlath'.
بنو العباب: قوم من العرب، سموا بذلك لأنهم خالطوا فارس، حتى عبت خيلهم في الفرات.

واليعبوب: فرس الربيع بن زياد، صفة غالبة.

Indeed, Allah has removed from you the pride of the Jahiliyyah, and its greatness through its ancestors, meaning arrogance, with a dammah on the 'ayn, and a kasrah.
والعبعب: الشباب التام.
And 'al-'ab'ab': complete youth.
بعد الجمال والشباب العبعب
After beauty and complete youth.
وشباب عبعب: تام.
And 'shabab 'ab'ab': complete.
وشاب عبعب: ممتلئ الشباب.
And a 'shab 'ab'ab': full of youth.
والعبعب: ثوب واسع.
And 'al-'ab'ab': a wide garment.
والعبعب: كساء غليظ، كثير الغزل، ناعم يعمل من وبر الإبل.
And 'al-'ab'ab': a thick, finely spun, soft garment made from camel hair.
والعبعب: صنم، وقد يقال بالغين المعجمة؛ وربما سمي موضع الصنم عبعبا.

بعد شباب عبعب التصوير يعني ضخم الصورة، جليل الكلام.
After youth 'ab'ab of form, meaning large in form, grand in speech.
وعبعب إذا انهزم، وعب إذا شرب، وعب إذا حسن وجهه بعد تغير، وعب الشمس: ضوءها، بالتخفيف؛
And 'ab'aba' if he fled, and 'abba' if he drank, and 'abba' if his face improved after a change, and 'abb ash-shams: its light, with shortening.
ورأس عب الشمس المخوف ذماؤها
And the head of 'abb ash-shams, whose blood is feared.
ومنهم من يقول: عب الشمس، فيشدد الباء.
And some of them say: 'abb ash-shams, with a shadda on the ba'.
عب الشمس ضوء الصبح.
'Abb ash-shams: the light of the morning.
كأن فاها عب قر بارد
As if her mouth were 'abb qarr of cold.
وبه سمي عبشمس؛ وقولهم: عب شمس؛ أرادوا عبد شمس.
And by it 'Abshams was named; and their saying: 'Abb shams; they meant 'Abd Shams.
بنو عب الشمس، وفي قريش: بنو عبد الشمس.
Banu 'Ab ash-Shams, and among Quraysh: Banu 'Abd ash-Shams.
عب عب إذا أمرته أن يستتر.
'Ab 'ab' if you order him to hide.
صددت، عن الأعداء يوم عباعب، ... صدود المذاكي أفرعتها المساحل
