كنا، إذا ما أتانا صارخ فزع، ... كان الصراخ له قرع الظنابيب

We were, when a panicked caller came to us, ... the outcry was like the striking of the shin bones.

وقرع ظنابيب الأمر: ذلله؛

And 'qara'a zanaabib al-amr': he subdued the matters;

قرعت ظنابيب الهوى، يوم عالج، ... ويوم اللوى، حتى قسرت الهوى قسرا

I subdued the prominent parts of desire, on the day of 'Alij, ... and on the day of al-Lawah, until I forced desire into submission.

يقول: ذللت الهوى بقرعي ظنبوبه كما تقرع ظنبوب البعير، ليتنوخ لك فتركبه، وكل ذلك على المثل؛

He says: I subdued desire by striking its 'zunbub' as one strikes the 'zunbub' of a camel so it kneels for you to ride it, and all of that is by way of a simile;

والظنبوب: مسمار يكون في جبة السنان، حيث يركب في عالية الرمح، وقد فسر به بيت سلامة.

And the 'zunbub': is a pin that is in the socket of the spearhead, where it is fitted into the upper part of the spear, and Salamah's verse has been interpreted with this meaning.

وقيل: قرع الظنبوب أن يقرع الرجل ظنبوب راحلته بعصاه إذا أناخها ليركبها ركوب المسرع إلى الشيء.

And it was said: 'Qar' al-zunbub' is when a man strikes the 'zunbub' of his mount with his stick when it kneels for him to ride it, like one who is rushing towards something.

ومن أمثالهم: قرع فلان لأمره ظنبوبه إذا جد فيه.

And among their proverbs: So-and-so 'qara'a li-amrihi zunbubah' when he became serious about it.

والظنب أصل الشجرة؛

And the 'zanab' is the base of the tree;

فلو أنها طافت بظنب معجم، ... نفى الرق عنه جدبه، فهو كالح لجاءت، كأن القسور الجون بجها ... عساليجه، والثامر المتناوح

If it had circled a withered tree base, ... its dryness would have removed the leaves, so it would be withered; then it came, as if the black 'qaswar' were its branches, ... and the fruitful, intertwined ones.
