وَحَكَى ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ: مَا عِنْدِي شَوْبٌ وَلَا رَوْبٌ؛
And Ibn al-A'rābī narrated: 'I have neither shūb nor rūb'.
فَالشَّوْبُ الْعَسَلُ، وَالرَّوْبُ اللَّبَنُ الرَّائِبُ؛
So the shūb is honey, and the rūb is curdled milk.
وَيُقَالُ: سَقَاهُ الشَّوْبَ بِالذَّوْبِ، فَالشَّوْبُ اللَّبَنُ، وَالذَّوْبُ الْعَسَلُ، قَالَهُ ابْنُ دُرَيْدٍ.
And it is said: 'He gave him to drink the milk with the honey', so the shūb is milk, and the dhawb is honey, said Ibn Durayd.
الْأَصْمَعِيُّ، فِي بَابِ إِصَابَةِ الرَّجُلِ فِي مَنْطِقِهِ مَرَّةً، وَإِخْطَائِهِ أُخْرَى: هُوَ يَشُوبُ وَيَرُوبُ.
Al-Asma'ī, in the chapter of a man being correct in his speech once, and mistaken another time: 'He mixes and curdles'.
وَالتَّشْوِيبُ أَنْ يَنْضَحَ نَضْحًا غَيْرَ مُبَالِغٍ فِيهِ، فَمَعْنَى قَوْلِهِمْ: هُوَ يَشُوبُ وَيَرُوبُ أَيْ يُدَافِعُ مُدَافَعَةً غَيْرَ مُبَالِغٍ فِيهَا، وَمَرَّةً يَكْسَلُ فَلَا يُدَافِعُ الْبَتَّةَ.
And 'al-tashwīb' is to exert a perfunctory effort, not exaggerating in it. So the meaning of their saying: 'He mixes and curdles' is that he defends in a way that is not exaggerated, and at other times he is lazy and does not defend at all.
وَقِيلَ: مَعْنَى لَا شَوْبَ وَلَا رَوْبَ أَنَّكَ بَرِيءٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ السِّلْعَةِ.
And it is said: The meaning of 'no shūb and no rūb' is that you are innocent of this commodity.
وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ: يَشْهَدُ بَيْعَكُمْ الْحِلْفُ وَاللَّغْوُ، فَشَوِّبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ؛
And in the hadith: 'In your sales, oaths and vain talk are present, so mix it with charity'.
وَإِنَّمَا بَنَاهُ عَلَى شَيْبِ الَّذِي لَمْ يُسَمَّ فَاعِلُهُ أَيْ مَخْلُوطٍ بِالتَّوَابِلِ وَالصِّبَاغِ.
And he based it on 'shayb' of the unspecified doer, meaning mixed with spices and colorings.
وَفِي فُلَانٍ شَوْبَةٌ أَيْ خَدِيعَةٌ، وَفِي فُلَانٍ ذَوْبَةٌ أَيْ حَمْقَةٌ ظَاهِرَةٌ.
And in so-and-so is a 'shawba', meaning deception, and in so-and-so is a 'dhawba', meaning obvious foolishness.
أَمَّا الْفَتْحَةُ الْمَشُوبَةُ بِالْكَسْرَةِ، فَالْفَتْحَةُ الَّتِي قَبْلَ الْإِمَالَةِ، نَحْوَ فَتْحَةِ عَيْنِ عَابِدٍ وَعَارِفٍ؛
As for the fatḥa that is mixed with kasra, it is the fatḥa that precedes imāla, like the fatḥa of 'ayn' in 'ʿābid' and 'ʿārif'.
وَالشَّوْبُ: الْقِطْعَةُ مِنَ الْعَجِينِ.
And 'al-shawb': the piece of dough.
وَبَاتَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ بِلَيْلَةٍ شَيْبَاءَ؛ قِيلَ: إِنَّ الْيَاءَ فِيهَا مُعَاقِبَةٌ، وَإِنَّمَا هُوَ مِنَ الْوَاوِ، لِأَنَّ مَاءَ الرَّجُلِ خَالَطَ مَاءَ الْمَرْأَةِ.
And the woman spent a night 'shaybā'; it is said: the ya' in it is a substitute, and it is from waw, because the man's fluid mixed with the woman's fluid.
وَالشَّائِبَةُ: وَاحِدَةُ الشَّوَائِبِ، وَهِيَ الْأَقْذَارُ وَالْأَدْنَاسُ.
And 'al-shā'iba': the singular of 'al-shawā'ib', which are impurities and filth.
وَشَيْبَانُ: قَبِيلَةٌ؛ قِيلَ يَاؤُهُ بَدَلٌ مِنَ الْوَاوِ، لِقَوْلِهِمُ الشَّوَّابِنَةُ.
And 'Shaybān': a tribe; it is said its ya' is a substitute for waw, because they say 'al-Shauwābina'.
وَشَابَّةٌ: مَوْضِعٌ بِنَجْدٍ، وَسَنَذْكُرُهُ فِي الْيَاءِ، لِأَنَّ هَذِهِ الْأَلِفَ تَكُونُ مِنْ مُنْقَلِبَةٍ عَنْ يَاءٍ وَعَنْ وَاوٍ، لِأَنَّ فِي الْكَلَامِ شَ و ب، وَفِيهِ ش ي ب، وَلَوْ جُهِلَ انْقِلَابُ هَذِهِ الْأَلِفِ لَحُمِلَتْ عَلَى الْوَاوِ، لِأَنَّ الْأَلِفَ هَاهُنَا عَيْنٌ، وَانْقِلَابُ الْأَلِفِ إِذَا كَانَتْ عَيْنًا عَنِ الْوَاوِ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ انْقِلَابِهَا عَنِ الْيَاءِ؛
And 'Shābbah': a place in Najd, and we will mention it under the letter ya', because this alif can be a transformation from ya' and from waw, because in the language there is sh-w-b, and in it sh-y-b. And if the transformation of this alif were unknown, it would be attributed to waw, because the alif here is the 'ayn' [middle radical], and the transformation of alif when it is the 'ayn' from waw is more common than its transformation from ya'.
وَحَنَظَلُ شَابَّةٍ، يَجْنِي هَبِيدَا
And the bitter colocynth of Shābbah, gathering habīdā.
