سمعت الأصمعي يقول الشنب برد الفم والأسنان، فقلت: إن أصحابنا يقولون هو حدتها حين تطلع؛ فيراد بذلك حداثتها وطراءتها، لأنها إذا أتت عليها السنون، احتكت، فقال: ما هو إلا بردها؛

I heard Al-Asma'i say: Al-shanab is the coolness of the mouth and teeth. I said: Our companions say it is their sharpness when they emerge; meaning their newness and freshness, because when years pass over them, they rub. He said: It is nothing but their coolness.

وقول ذي الرمة: لمياء، في شفتيها حوة لعس، ... وفي اللثات، وفي أنيابها، شنب يؤيد قول الأصمعي، لأن اللثة لا تكون فيها حدة.

And the saying of Dhu al-Rummah: Lamya', on her lips is a dark redness... and in her gums, and in her canines, shanab, supports the saying of Al-Asma'i, because the gum does not have sharpness.

فقالت طائفة: هو تحزيز أطراف الأسنان؛ وقيل: هو صفاؤها ونقاؤها؛ وقيل: هو تفليجها؛ وقيل: هو طيب نكهتها.

A group said: it is the grooving of the edges of the teeth; and it is said: it is their clarity and purity; and it is said: it is their spacing; and it is said: it is the pleasantness of their odor.

وقال الأصمعي: الشنب البرد والعذوبة في الفم.

And Al-Asma'i said: Al-shanab is the coolness and sweetness in the mouth.

وقال ابن شميل: الشنب في الأسنان أن تراها مستشربة شيئا من سواد، كما ترى الشيء من السواد في البرد؛

And Ibn Shumayl said: Al-shanab in the teeth is to see them tinged with a bit of blackness, as you see blackness in coolness;

والغرب: ماء الأسنان. والظلم: بياضها، كأنه يعلوه سواد.

And al-gharb: the wateriness of teeth. And al-ẓulm: their whiteness, as if blackness covers it.

والمشانب: الأفواه الطيبة.

And al-mashānab: the good-smelling mouths.

ابن الأعرابي: المشنب الغلام الحدث، المحدد الأسنان، المؤشرها فتاء وحداثة.

Ibn al-A'rābī: Al-mushannab is the young boy, with sharp teeth, whose teeth are marked by youthfulness and newness.

وفي صفته، صلى الله عليه وسلم: ضليع الفم أشنب.
