ويقال: خل سربه أي طريقه، فالمعنى: الظاهر في الطرقات، والمستخفي في الظلمات، والجاهر بنطقه، والمضمر في نفسه، علم الله فيهم سواء.

And it is said: leave his path, meaning his way, so the meaning is: the one appearing in the streets, and the one hidden in the darkness, the one vocal in his speech, and the one silent in his heart, God knows them all equally.

يقال انسرب الوحشي إذا دخل في كناسه.

It is said the wild animal entered its lair when it went into its hiding place.

تقول العرب: سربت الإبل تسرب، وسرب الفحل سروبا أي مضت في الأرض ظاهرة حيث شاءت.

The Arabs say: the camels moved forth, and the stud-male moved forth, meaning it went across the land openly wherever it wished.

والسارب: الذاهب على وجهه في الأرض؛ قال قيس بن الخطيم: أنى سربت، وكنت غير سروب، ... وتقرب الأحلام غير قريب

And the one going forth: the one going aimlessly on the earth; Qais bin Al-Khatim said: How did you go forth, when you were not one to go forth, ... and dreams approach not near.

وإنما المعنى آمن في أهله وماله وولده؛ ولو أمن على نفسه وحدها دون أهله وماله وولده، لم يقل: هو آمن في سربه؛ وإنما السرب هاهنا ما للرجل من أهل ومال، ولذلك سمي قطيع البقر، والظباء، والقطا، والنساء سربا.

The meaning is safe in his family, property, and children; if he were safe for himself alone without his family, property, and children, it would not be said: he is safe in his 'sirb'; rather, 'as-sirb' here is what a man has of family and property, and for that reason, a herd of cows, gazelles, sandgrouse, and women are called 'sirb'.

والسرب، بالكسر: القطيع من النساء، والطير، والظباء، والبقر، والحمر، والشاء، واستعاره شاعر من الجن، زعموا، للعظاء فقال، أنشده ثعلب، رحمه الله تعالى: ركبت المطايا كلهن، فلم أجد ... ألذ وأشهى من جناد الثعالب ومن عضرفوط، حط بي فزجرته، ... يبادر سربا من عظاء قوارب

And 'as-sirb', with kasra: the flock of women, birds, gazelles, cows, donkeys, and sheep, and a poet of the jinn, they claim, borrowed it for lizards and said, Thaalab, may God have mercy on him, recited to us: I rode all the mounts, and found nothing ... more delicious and desirable than the young of foxes, and a hoopoe, it landed near me and I shooed it away, ... it hurries a flock of approaching lizards.

والجمع من كل ذلك أسراب؛ والسربة مثله.

And the plural of all that is 'asrab'; and 'as-surabah' is similar.

وفي الحديث: كأنهم سرب ظباء ؛ السرب، بالكسر، والسربة: القطيع من الظباء ومن النساء على التشبيه بالظباء.

And in the hadith: as if they were a flock of gazelles; 'as-sirb', with kasra, and 'as-surabah': the flock of gazelles and of women by analogy with gazelles.

وفي حديث عائشة، رضي الله عنها: فكان رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، يسربهن إلي، فيلعبن معي أي يرسلهن إلي.

And in the hadith of Aisha, may God be pleased with her: So the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, would send them to me, meaning he would send them to me.

ويقال: سرب عليه الخيل، وهو أن يبعثها عليه سربة بعد سربة.

And it is said: horses were sent against him, which is sending them against him in waves after waves.

وخل سربه، بالفتح، أي طريقه ووجهه؛ وقال أبو عمرو: خل سرب الرجل، بالكسر؛ قال ذو الرمة: خلى لها سرب أولاها، وهيجها، ... من خلفها، لاحق الصقلين، همهيم

And leave his path, with fatha, meaning his way and his direction; and Abu Amr said: leave the man's path, with kasra; Dhu Al-Rummah said: He cleared for it its first path, and stirred it up, ... from behind it, the one with long legs, a murmurer.

وفي حديث ابن عمر: إذا مات المؤمن يخلى له سربه، يسرح حيث شاء أي طريقه ومذهبه الذي يمر به.

And in the hadith of Ibn Umar: When a believer dies, his path is cleared for him, he roams where he wishes, meaning his way and his course which he passes through.

وإنه لواسع السرب أي الصدر، والرأي، والهوى، وقيل: هو الرخي البال، وقيل: هو الواسع الصدر، البطيء الغضب؛ ويروى بالفتح، واسع السرب، وهو المسلك والطريق.

And indeed he has a broad 'sirb', meaning chest, opinion, and inclination; and it is said: he is of relaxed disposition, and it is said: he is broad-chested, slow to anger; and it is narrated with fatha, 'wide 'sirb'', which is the passage and the road.

فاتخذ سبيله في البحر سربا ؛ قال: كان الحوت مالحا، فلما حيي بالماء الذي أصابه من العين فوقع في البحر، جمد مذهبه في البحر، فكان كالسرب، وقال أبو إسحاق: كانت سمكة مملوحة، وكانت آية لموسى في الموضع الذي يلقى الخضر، فاتخذ سبيله في البحر سربا؛ أحيا الله السمكة حتى سربت في البحر.

So he took his way in the sea as a path; he said: the fish was salty, and when it was revived by the water it got from the spring and fell into the sea, its course in the sea solidified, and it became like a path, and Abu Ishaq said: it was a salty fish, and it was a sign for Moses in the place where he met Al-Khidr, so he took his way in the sea as a path; God revived the fish until it moved in the sea.

والسربة: الصف من الكرم. وكل طريقة سربة.

And 'as-surabah': the row of vines. Every path is a 'sirbah'.

والسربة، والمسربة، والمسربة، بضم الراء، الشعر المستدق، النابت وسط الصدر إلى البطن؛ وفي الصحاح: الشعر المستدق، الذي يأخذ من الصدر إلى السرة.

And 'as-surabah', and 'al-masrabah', and 'al-masrabah', with damma of the ra, the fine hair, growing from the middle of the chest to the abdomen; and in Al-Sihah: the fine hair, which extends from the chest to the navel.

وفي حديث صفة النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم: كان دقيق المسربة ؛ وفي رواية: كان ذا مسربة.

And in the hadith describing the Prophet, peace be upon him: He had fine hair on his chest; and in another narration: He had hair on his chest.

وفي حديث الاستنجاء بالحجارة: يمسح صفحتيه بحجرين، ويمسح بالثالث المسربة ؛ يريد أعلى الحلقة، هو بفتح الراء وضمها، مجرى الحدث من الدبر، وكأنها من السرب المسلك.

And in the hadith about cleansing with stones: he wipes his sides with two stones, and wipes with the third the passage; meaning the upper part of the anus, it is with fatha and damma of the ra, the passage of waste from the anus, and it is as if it is from 'as-sirb', the passage.

والسراب: الآل؛ وقيل: السراب الذي يكون نصف النهار لاطئا بالأرض، لاصقا بها، كأنه ماء جار.

And 'as-sarab': the mirage; and it is said: 'as-sarab' is what is at noon, lying close to the ground, sticking to it, as if it were flowing water.

والآل: الذي يكون بالضحى، يرفع الشخوص ويزهاها، كالملا، بين السماء والأرض.

And 'al-aal': that which is in the forenoon, it raises figures and magnifies them, like a plain, between the sky and the earth.

والسراب الذي يجري على وجه الأرض كأنه الماء، وهو يكون نصف النهار؛ قال الأزهري: وهو الذي رأيت العرب بالبادية يقولونه.

And 'as-sarab' which runs on the surface of the earth like water, and it occurs at noon; Al-Azhari said: and this is what I saw the Arabs in the desert saying.
