أهل اليمن ومن يركب البحر، فيما بين جدة وعدن، يسمون الجنوب الأزيب، لا يعرفون لها اسما غيره، وذلك أنها تعصف الرياح، وتثير البحر حتى تسوده، وتقلب أسفله، فتجعله أعلاه؛
The people of Yemen and those who sail the sea, between Jeddah and Aden, call the south wind Al-Azib; they know no other name for it. This is because it makes the winds violent, stirs up the sea until it turns black, and flips its bottom to its top.
كل ريح شديدة ذات أزيب، فإنما زيبها شدتها.
Every strong wind has an 'azib (intensity); its 'azib is its severity.
والأزيب: الماء الكثير، حكاه أبو علي عن أبي عمرو الشيباني؛

It is said: So-and-so passed by with remarkable speed and vigor, meaning he passed very quickly out of energy.
وأخذه الأزيب أي الفزع.
And 'taking Al-Azib' means fear.
والأزيب: الرجل المتقارب المشي.

ويقال للرجل القصير، المتقارب الخطو: أزيب.
