When he was asked about a perplexing matter, he would say: 'A hairy, woolly (matter), if the companions of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, were asked about it, it would have perplexed them.'

يقال للداهية الصعبة: زباء ذات وبر، يعني أنها جمعت بين الشعر والوبر، أراد أنها مسألة مشكلة، شبهها بالناقة النفور، لصعوبتها.

A difficult and dangerous matter is called 'zabā' dhāt wabar', meaning it combines hair and wool, intending that it is a problematic issue, likened to a skittish she-camel due to its difficulty.

ويقال للداهية المنكرة: زباء ذات وبر.

And a strange and formidable matter is called 'zabā' dhāt wabar'.

ويقال للناقة الكثيرة الوبر: زباء، والجمل أزب.

And a she-camel with abundant wool is called 'zabā'', and the male camel is 'azb'.

وعام أزب: مخصب، كثير النبات.

And an 'azb' year: fertile, abundant in vegetation.

وزبت الشمس زبا، وأزبت، وزببت: دنت للغروب، وهو من ذلك، لأنها تتوارى كما يتوارى لون العضو بالشعر.

And the sun set 'zabā', and 'azbat', and 'zababat': it neared sunset, and it is from that, because it hides itself as the color of a limb is hidden by hair.

يبعث أهل النار وفدهم فيرجعون إليهم زبا حبنا ؛

And 'al-zub': the penis, in the language of the people of Yemen, and Ibn Durayd specified it for the male organ of humans, and said: it is correct Arabic;

أن طال خصياه، وقصر زبه

That his testicles are long, and his penis is short.

And the plural: 'azb', 'azbāb', and 'zubabah'.

والزب: اللحية، يمانية؛ وقيل: هو مقدم اللحية، عند بعض أهل اليمن؛

And 'al-zub': the beard, a Yeminite term; and it was said: it is the front part of the beard, according to some people of Yemen;

ففاضت دموع الجحمتين بعبرة ... على الزب، حتى الزب، في الماء، غامس

So tears flowed from the two dark ones with a sob ... onto the beard, until the beard, in the water, was submerged.

وقيل الزب الأنف، بلغة أهل اليمن.

And it was said 'al-zub' is the nose, in the language of the people of Yemen.

والزب ملؤك القربة إلى رأسها؛ يقال: زببتها فازدبت.

And 'al-zub' is filling a waterskin to its brim; it is said: I filled it, and it became full.

والزبيب: السم في فم الحية.

And 'al-zubīb': the venom in the mouth of a snake.

والزبيب: زبد الماء؛ ومنه قوله: حتى إذا تكشف الزبيب

And 'al-zubīb': the foam of water; and from it is his saying: Until the foam cleared away.

والزبيب: ذاوي العنب، معروف، واحدته زبيبة؛ وقد أزب العنب؛ وزبب فلان عنبه تزبيبا.

And 'al-zubīb': dried grapes, known, its singular is 'zubaybah'; and the grapes have dried; and so-and-so dried his grapes by drying.

واستعمل أعرابي، من أعراب السراة، الزبيب في التين، فقال: الفيلحاني تين شديد السواد، جيد الزبيب، يعني يابسه، وقد زبب التين، عن أبي حنيفة أيضا.

And an Arab of the Sarāh used 'al-zubīb' for figs, and said: Al-Faylḥānī figs are intensely black, with good 'zubīb', meaning dried ones, and the figs have been dried, according to Abū Ḥanīfah also.

والزبيبة: قرحة تخرج في اليد، كالعرفة؛ وقيل تسمى العرفة.

And 'al-zubaybah': an ulcer that appears on the hand, like 'al-'arafah'; and it was said it is called 'al-'arafah'.

والزبيب: اجتماع الريق في الصماغين.

And 'al-zubīb': the accumulation of saliva in the sublingual glands.

والزبيبتان: زبدتان في شدقي الإنسان، إذا أكثر الكلام.

And 'al-zubaybatān': two frothy accumulations in a person's cheeks, when he speaks excessively.

وقد زبب شدقاه: اجتمع الريق في صامغيهما؛ واسم ذلك الريق: الزبيبتان.

And his cheeks have foamed: saliva has gathered in their sublingual glands; and the name of that saliva is 'al-zubaybatān'.

وزبب فم الرجل عند الغيظ إذا رأيت له زبيبتين في جنبي فيه، عند ملتقى شفتيه مما يلي اللسان، يعني ريقا يابسا.

And a man's mouth foams with rage when you see two 'zubaybatan' on its sides, at the meeting of his lips near the tongue, meaning dry saliva.

حتى عرقت وزبب صماغاك أي خرج زبد فيك في جانبي شفتيك.

Until you sweat and your sublingual glands foam, meaning foam came out in your mouth on the sides of your lips.

وتقول: تكلم فلان حتى زبب شدقاه أي خرج الزبد عليهما.

And you say: So-and-so spoke until his cheeks foamed, meaning foam came out on them.

وتزبب الرجل إذا امتلأ غيظا؛ ومنه: الحية ذو الزبيبتين؛

And a man 'tazabbaba' if he became full of rage; and from it: the snake with two 'zubaybatān';

وقيل: الحية ذات الزبيبتين التي لها نقطتان سوداوان فوق عينيها.

And it was said: the snake with two 'zubaybatān' which has two black spots above its eyes.

يجيء كنز أحدهم يوم القيامة شجاعا أقرع له زبيبتان.

One of them will bring his treasure on the Day of Resurrection as a scaly serpent with two 'zubaybatān'.

والنكتتان السوداوان فوق عينيه، وهو أوحش ما يكون من الحيات وأخبثه.

And the two black spots above its eyes, and it is the most terrifying and wicked of snakes.

ويقال إن الزبيبتين هما الزبدتان تكونان في شدقي الإنسان، إذا غضب وأكثر الكلام حتى يزبد.

And it is said that 'al-zubaybatān' are the two frothy accumulations that occur in a person's cheeks when he gets angry and speaks excessively until he foams.

الزبيبة نكتة سوداء فوق عين الحية، وهما نقطتان تكتنفان فاها، وقيل: هما زبدتان في شدقيها.

'Al-zubaybah' is a black spot above the snake's eye, and they are two spots that surround its mouth, and it was said: they are two frothy accumulations in its cheeks.

ربما أنشدت أبي حتى يتزبب شدقاي؛

Perhaps I recited poetry to my father until my cheeks foamed;

إني، إذا ما زبب الأشداق، ... وكثر الضجاج واللقلاق،

Indeed, when the cheeks foam, ... and clamor and chatter increase,

والتزبب: التزيد في الكلام.

And 'al-tazabbub': exaggeration in speech.

وزبزب إذا غضب.

And he 'zabzaba' if he became angry.

وزبزب إذا انهزم في الحرب.

And he 'zabzaba' if he retreated in war.

والزبزب: ضرب من السفن.

والزباب: جنس من الفأر، لا شعر عليه؛

And 'al-zabāb': a genus of mice, without hair;

وقيل: هو فأر عظيم أحمر، حسن الشعر؛

And it was said: it is a large, red mouse, with beautiful hair;

وقيل: هو فأر أصم؛ قال الحرث بن حلزة: وهم زباب حائر، ... لا تسمع الآذان رعدا

And it was said: it is a deaf mouse; Al-Ḥārith ibn Hillizah said: And they are bewildered mice/rats, ... their ears do not hear thunder.

والعرب تضرب بها المثل فتقول: أسرق من زبابة؛

And the Arabs use it as a proverb, saying: More thieving than a 'zubābah';

ويشبه بها الجاهل، واحدته زبابة، وفيها طرش، ويجمع زبابا وزبابات؛

And the ignorant person is likened to it, its singular is 'zubābah', and it has deafness, and its plural is 'zabāb' and 'zabābāt';

وقيل: الزباب ضرب من الجرذان عظام؛ وأنشد: وثبة سرعوب رأى زبابا

And it was said: 'al-zabāb' is a type of large gerbils; and he recited: A quick leap of a weasel saw a large gerbil.

أنا إذا، والله، مثل الذي أحيط بها، فقيل زباب زباب، حتى دخلت جحرها، ثم احتفر عنها فاجتر برجلها، فذبحت ، أراد الضبع، إذا أرادوا صيدها، أحاطوا بها في جحرها، ثم قالوا لها: زباب زباب، كأنهم يؤنسونها بذلك.

I am, by God, like the one who was surrounded, and it was said 'zabāb zabāb', until it entered its den, then they dug around it and dragged it by its leg, and it was slaughtered. He meant the hyena, when they want to hunt it, they surround it in its den, then they say to it: 'zabāb zabāb', as if they are trying to comfort it.

والزباب: جنس من الفأر لا يسمع، لعلها تأكله كما تأكل الجراد؛ المعنى: لا أكون مثل الضبع تخادع عن حتفها.

And 'al-zabāb': a genus of mice that do not hear, perhaps it eats them like it eats locusts; the meaning is: I will not be like the hyena that is deceived from its doom.

والزباء: اسم الملكة الرومية، يمد ويقصر، وهي ملكة الجزيرة، تعد من ملوك الطوائف.

And 'al-Zabā'': the name of the Roman queen, pronounced with short or long 'alif', and she is the queen of the East, counted among the kings of the factions.

والزباء: شعبة ماء لبني كليب؛ قال غسان السليطي يهجو جريرا: أما كليب، فإن اللؤم حالفها، ... ما سال في حقلة الزباء واديها

And 'al-Zabā'': a watercourse of Banu Kulayb; Ghassān al-Sulayṭī said, satirizing Jarīr: As for Kulayb, baseness is their ally, ... no valley of 'al-Zabā'' has flowed in their field.

And Banu Zubaybah: a clan.

وزبان: اسم، فمن جعل ذلك فعالا من زبن، صرفه، ومن جعله فعلان من زب، لم يصرفه.

And 'Zabān': a name, so whoever makes it 'fa'āl' from 'zabana', he conjugates it, and whoever makes it 'fa'lān' from 'zab', he does not conjugate it.

ويقال: زب الحمل وزأبه وازدبه إذا حمله.

And it is said: 'zab' the camel, and 'za'abahu', and 'izdabahu' if he carried it.
