والشغواء: العقاب، سميت بذلك من الشغى، وهو انعطاف منقارها الأعلى.
And 'al-shaghwaa': the eagle, it is so named from 'al-shaghaa', which is the curvature of its upper beak.
والحادرة: الغليظة.
And 'al-hadirah': the stout one.
والظمياء: المائلة إلى السواد.
And 'al-dhmaa': the one inclining to blackness.
وخوافيها: يريد خوافي ريش جناحيها.
And 'khawafiha': it means the flight feathers of its wings.
والأشارير: جمع إشرارة، وهي اللحم المجفف.
And 'al-ashareer': plural of 'isharah', which is dried meat.
وتتمره: تقطعه.
And 'tattamiruhu': it cuts it into pieces.
واللحم المتمر: المقطع؛ والوخز: شيء منه، ليس بالكثير.
And 'al-lahm al-mutammar': the cut meat; and 'al-wakhz': a small amount of it, not much.
وكساء مرنباني: لونه لون الأرنب.
And a 'marnabani' garment: its color is the color of a rabbit.
ومؤرنب ومرنب: خلط في غزله وبر الأرنب؛ وقيل: المؤرنب كالمرنباني؛
And 'mu'arnab' and 'murnab': mixed in its yarn is rabbit fur; and it was said: 'al-mu'arnab' is like 'al-marnabani'.

It hung down, upon the small birds, as if it were... balls of a boy, from a 'mu'arnab' garment.
وهو أحد ما جاء على أصله، مثل قول خطام المجاشعي:
And it is one of what came according to its origin, like the saying of Khitam Al-Majashi'i:
غير خطام، ورماد كنفين وغير ود جاذل، أو ودين، ... وصاليات ككما يؤثفين
Except for a nose-ring, and ashes of two pots, and not a stout peg, or two pegs, ... and cooking stones as you place them on tripods.
أي لم يبق من هذه الدار التي خلت من أهلها، مما تحلى به وتعرف، غير رماد القدر والأثافي؛ وهي حجارة القدر والوتد الذي تشد إليه حبال البيوت؛ والود: الوتد إلا أنه أدغم التاء في الدال، فقال ود.
Meaning, nothing remains of this dwelling that has become empty of its people, from what it was adorned with and known by, except the ashes of the pot and the tripods; and they are the stones of the pot and the peg to which the ropes of the houses are tied; and 'al-wudd': the peg, except that the 'taa' was assimilated into the 'dal', so he said 'wudd'.
والجاذل: المنتصب؛ قال ابن بري ومثله قول الآخر:
And 'al-jathil': the erect; Ibn Birri said, and similar to it is the saying of another:
فإنه أهل لأن يؤكرما
For he is worthy of being honored.
والمعروف في كلام العرب: لأن يكرم؛ وكذلك هو مع حروف المضارعة نحو أكرم، ونكرم، وتكرم، ويكرم؛ قال: وكان قياس يؤثفين عنده يثفين، من قولك أثفيت القدر إذا جعلتها على الأثافي، وهي الحجارة.
And what is known in the speech of the Arabs is: 'li-an yukrama'; and similarly it is with the present tense particles like 'akrama', 'nakrumu', 'takrumu', and 'yakrumu'; he said: And 'yu'aththifayn' according to him was 'yuththifayn', from your saying 'athfaytu al-qidra' if you placed it on the tripods, which are the stones.
وأرض مرنبة ومؤرنبة، بكسر النون، الأخيرة عن كراع: كثيرة الأرانب؛ قال أبو منصور، ومنه قول الشاعر:
And a 'marnabah' and 'mu'arnabah' land, with a kasra on the noon, the latter from Karaa': abundant with rabbits; Abu Mansur said, and from it is the saying of the poet:
قال: كان في العربية مرنب، فرد إلى الأصل.
He said: In Arabic, there was 'murnab', and it was returned to the origin.
قال الليث: ألف أرنب زائدة.
Al-Layth said: The 'alif' in 'arnab' is extra.
قال أبو منصور: وهي عند أكثر النحويين قطعية.
Abu Mansur said: And it is, according to most grammarians, radical.
وقال الليث: لا تجيء كلمة في أولها ألف، فتكون أصلية، إلا أن تكون الكلمة ثلاثة أحرف مثل الأرض والأرش والأمر.
And Al-Layth said: A word does not come with an 'alif' at its beginning that is radical, unless the word is three letters, like 'al-ard' (earth), 'al-arsh' (throne), and 'al-amr' (matter).
أبو عمرو: المرنبة القطيفة ذات الخمل.
Abu Amr: 'Al-marnabah' is a velvet cloth with pile.
والأرنبة: طرف الأنف، وجمعها الأرانب.
And 'al-arnabah': the tip of the nose, and its plural is 'al-aranib'.
يقال: هم شم الأنوف، واردة أرانبهم.
It is said: They are of noble noses, and their nose-tips are prominent.
وفي حديث الخدري: فلقد رأيت على أنف رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأرنبته أثر الطين.
And in the hadith of Al-Khudri: 'I have seen on the nose of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and its tip, the trace of mud.'
واليرنب والمرنب: جرذ، كاليربوع، قصير الذنب.
And 'al-yarnab' and 'al-murnab': a gerbil, like the jerboa, short-tailed.
الأرنب: موضع؛ قال عمرو بن معدي كرب:
Al-Arnab: a place; Amr ibn Ma'di Karib said:
عجت نساء بني زبيد عجة، ... كعجيج نسوتنا، غداة الأرنب
The women of Bani Zubayd cried out with a cry, ... like the cry of our women, on the morning of Al-Arnab.
والأرنب: ضرب من الحلي؛ قال رؤبة:
And 'al-arnab': a type of jewelry; Ru'bah said:
وعلقت من أرنب ونخل
And I hung from 'arnab' and palm trees.
والأرينبة: عشبة شبيهة بالنصي، إلا أنها أرق وأضعف وألين، وهي ناجعة في المال جدا، ولها، إذا جفت، سفى، كلما حرك تطاير فارتز في العيون والمناخر؛ عن أبي حنيفة.
And 'al-arinibah': a herb similar to 'al-nasi', except that it is thinner, weaker, and softer, and it is very beneficial for livestock, and it has, when dry, fluff, which flies off whenever moved and gets into the eyes and nostrils; from Abu Hanifa.
حتى رأيت الأرنبة تأكلها صغار الإبل.
Until I saw the 'arnabah' being eaten by young camels.
أحدهما أنها واحدة الأرانب، حملها السيل، حتى تعلقت في الشجر، فأكلت؛ قال: وهو بعيد لأن الإبل لا تأكل اللحم.
One of them is that it is a single rabbit, carried by the flood, until it got caught in the trees, and was eaten; he said: And this is unlikely because camels do not eat meat.
والثاني: أن معناه أنها نبت لا يكاد يطول، فأطاله هذا المطر حتى صار للإبل مرعى.
And the second: that its meaning is a plant that hardly grows tall, and this rain made it grow until it became pasture for the camels.
والذي عليه أهل اللغة: أن اللفظة إنما هي الأرينة، بياء تحتها نقطتان، وبعدها نون، وهو نبت معروف، يشبه الخطمي، عريض الورق، وسنذكره في أرن.
And what is upon the linguists: that the word is actually 'al-arinah', with a 'yaa' with two dots below it, and then a 'noon', and it is a known plant, resembling mallow, with broad leaves, and we will mention it under 'arn'.
قال شمر قال بعضهم: سألت الأصمعي عن الأرنبة، فقال: نبت؛ قال شمر: وهو عندي الأرينة، سمعت في الفصيح من أعراب سعد بن بكر، ببطن مر، قال: ورأيته نباتا يشبه الخطمي، عريض الورق.
Shammir said: Some of them said: I asked Al-Asma'i about 'al-arnabah', and he said: a plant; Shammir said: And in my opinion, it is 'al-arinah', I heard in Al-Fasih from the Bedouins of Sa'd ibn Bakr, in Batn Mar, he said: And I saw it as a plant resembling mallow, with broad leaves.
قال شمر: وسمعت غيره من أعراب كنانة يقول: هو الأرين.
Shammir said: And I heard another from the Bedouins of Kinanah say: It is 'al-arin'.
وقالت أعرابية، من بطن مر: هي الأرينة، وهي خطمينا، وغسول الرأس؛
And a Bedouin woman, from Batn Mar, said: It is 'al-arinah', and it is our mallow, and a hair wash.
قال أبو منصور: وهذا الذي حكاه شمر صحيح، والذي روي عن الأصمعي أنه الأرنبة من الأرانب غير صحيح؛ وشمر متقن، وقد عني بهذا الحرف، فسأل عنه غير واحد من الأعراب حتى أحكمه، والرواة ربما صحفوا وغيروا؛ قال: ولم أسمع الأرنبة، في باب النبات، من واحد، ولا رأيته في نبوت البادية.
Abu Mansur said: And this which Shammir narrated is correct, and what was narrated from Al-Asma'i that it is 'al-arnabah' from rabbits is incorrect; and Shammir is precise, and he was concerned with this letter, so he asked more than one Bedouin about it until he mastered it, and narrators sometimes make errors and change things; he said: And I have not heard 'al-arnabah', in the category of plants, from anyone, nor have I seen it in the plants of the desert.
قال: وهو خطأ عندي.
He said: And it is an error in my opinion.
قال: وأحسب القتيبي ذكر عن الأصمعي أيضا الأرنبة، وهو غير صحيح.
He said: And I think Al-Qutaybi also mentioned 'al-arnabah' from Al-Asma'i, and it is incorrect.
وأرنب: اسم امرأة؛ قال معن بن أوس:
And Arnab: the name of a woman; Ma'n ibn Aws said:
متى تأتهم، ترفع بناتي برنة، ... وتصدح بنوح، يفزع النوح، أرنب
When you come to them, my daughters will raise a wail, ... and cry out with lamentation, the lamentation will frighten, Arnab.
