Ibn Shumayl said: It is said: Tudaʿbaba-tu ʿalayhi means I behaved affectedly towards him; and indeed he is a playful person: he is one who sways towards people, and imposes himself on them with his cunning or his side; and indeed he behaves playfully towards people, meaning he imposes himself on them with jesting and arrogance, and annoys them without insulting them.

قال الليث: فأما المداعبة، فعلى الاشتراك، كالممازحة، اشترك فيها اثنان أو أكثر.
Al-Layth said: As for al-mudāʿabah, it is on the basis of participation, like playful joking, in which two or more people participate.

أراد ظلام ليلة، فحذف المضاف، وأقام المضاف إليه مقامه.
He intended the darkness of a night, so he deleted the possessed noun and replaced it with the possessor.
والدعوب: الطريق المذلل، الموطوء الواضح الذي يسلكه الناس؛
And al-duʿbūb: the easy, trodden, clear path that people take;
وكذلك الذي يطؤه كل أحد.
And likewise that which everyone treads upon.
والدعوب: الضعيف الذي يهزأ منه الناس؛ وقيل: هو القصير الدميم؛
And al-duʿbūb: the weak person who is ridiculed by people; and it is said: he is short and ugly;
وقيل: الدعبوب والدعبوث من الرجال: المأبون المخنث؛ وأنشد:
And it is said: al-duʿbūb and al-duʿbūth among men: the effeminate, homosexual man; and he recited:
يا فتى ما قتلتم غير دعبوب، ... ولا من قوارة الهنبر
O young man, you killed no one but an effeminate man, ... nor from the strong ones of the tribe.
وقيل: الدعبوب النشيط؛ قال الراجز:

يا رب مهر، حسن دعبوب، ... رحب اللبان، حسن التقريب
O Lord of foals, a beautiful, energetic one, ... broad-chested, well-approached.
ودعبب: ثمر نبت. قال السيرافي: هو عنب الثعلب.
And daʿbaba: the fruit of a plant. Al-Sīrāfī said: it is fox grapes.
وقال أبو صخر: ولكن يقر العين والنفس أن ترى، ... بعقدته، فضلات زرق دواعب
And Abū Ṣakhr said: But it pleases the eye and the soul to see, ... in its knot, blue playful drops.
قال: دواعب جوار. ماء دعب يستن في سبيله؛
He said: playful female companions. Water that flows in its course;
وقال: لا أدري دواعب أم ذواعب، فلينظر في شعر أبي صخر.
And he said: I do not know if they are playful or swift, so let him look into the poetry of Abū Ṣakhr.
